Following a weekend that saw the Premier League return after a lengthy international break, attention is already beginning to shift towards the next transfer window.

Clubs across England are assessing their squads after the opening months of the season, with some targeting reinforcements for an immediate push up the table and others laying the groundwork for much longer-term plans.

With January edging closer and the rumour mill continuing to move at pace, Football Whispers takes a look at the top stories dominating the day's backpages.

Liverpool remain interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal ahead of the 2027 summer transfer window.

According to reports in Spain, Atletico Madrid are also monitoring the Spain youth international, while the Reds continue to track his development at Camp Nou.

However, the LaLiga giants are reluctant to sanction a sale, with Bernal tied down until 2029 and protected by a reported €500m (£422m) release clause.

Despite strong competition for places in Hansi Flick's midfield, Liverpool remain attentive to the 19-year-old's situation as they assess potential long-term additions in the centre of the park.

Arsenal are still in the race to sign RB Leipzig winger Antonio Nusa ahead of next summer.

Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also competing for the Norway international, whose performances in Germany continue to attract Premier League attention, per reports.

The Bundesliga outfit are understood to value Nusa at around £60m amid growing interest in his signature.

Even though there is significant competition from fellow English clubs, Arsenal remain firmly in the conversation as they monitor one of Europe's most exciting young attacking talents.

Everton and Leeds United are among the clubs interested in signing Rennes striker Esteban Lepaul ahead of the January transfer window.

Reports now suggest that Villa, Brentford and Brighton have also been tracking the France international following his impressive rise in Ligue 1.

Rennes recently moved to secure Lepaul's long-term future with a new contract after growing interest from England intensified, having bagged four goals in six league games this season.

Despite interest from several Premier League rivals, Everton and Leeds remain firmly in the conversation as they continue to monitor one of French football's most in-form forwards.
