We're bringing you our AFCON predictions for Sunday's Final which will be played between Nigeria and Ivory Coast. It's the final that many before the tournament hoped it would be, two of West Africa's finest footballing nations going head-to-head in what could be the best AFCON final of all time.

Nigeria were the pre-tournament favourite and have the best squad in Africa on paper but they go up against a rejuvenated host nation in the form of the Ivory Coast who started the tournament poorly, sacked their manager, and have gone on to improve and got their fans back on side.

Nigeria vs Ivory Coast prediction – Betting tips & odds

Hot Tip – Under 1.5 Goals

  • Four of the last seven meetings between these two countries have produced under 1.5 goals.
  • Four of Nigeria's last six matches have witnessed fewer than 1.5 goals.

Another reason why we're backing under 1.5 goals in this game is that Ivory Coast's semi-final against Congo DR and their group game against Nigeria also featured under 1.5 goals.

Nigeria vs Ivory Coast team news

Nigeria

Nigeria weren't as convincing in their semi-final game against South Africa as a lot of people expected but still did enough to reach the final. The game was tight and tense throughout with both teams looking dangerous going forward but it wasn't until the sixty-seventh minute that Nigeria took the lead via a William Troost-Ekong penalty that went under the body of Rowen Williams in the South Africa goal.

Nigeria thought they had made sure of their place in the final when Victor Osimhen scored from close range late on, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a foul on a South African player in the Nigeria penalty area which allowed Teboho Mokoena to level the scores and take the match into extra time. No goals were scored in the extra thirty minutes of football but South Africa did have a player sent-off. The game was settled by a penalty shoot-out in which Stanley Nwabali made himself a hero, saving two of the South African spot-kicks allowing Kelechi Iheanacho to score and put Nigeria into the final.

Predicted Lineup: Nwabali (GK), Troost-Ekong, Ajayi, Aina, Osayi-Samuel, Bassey, Onyeka, Iwobi, Simon, Osimhen & Lookman

Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast's semi-final against Congo DR proved a little more simple than Nigeria's but it was still a closely fought game. Congo DR started the better of the two clubs but by the end of the first half Ivory Coast would have missed a clear header and hit the post.

Sebastien Haller who wasn't at his sharpest managed to score the only goal of the game in the sixty-fifth minute, when his mishit shot bounced over the Congo DR goalkeeper and into the top corner, it was the least the hosts deserved as they were the better side during the ninety minutes.

Predicted Lineup: Fofana (GK), Boly, Konan, Ndicka, Singo, Gradel, Seri, Fofana, Kessié, Haller & Adingra

Player to Watch: William Troost-Ekong

Nigeria's captain William Troost-Ekong was been one of the players of the tournament at AFCON 2023, scoring two penalties and one in the shoot-out, leading his teammates by example.

We're backing Troost-Ekong to put in another solid defensive display in the final and if the opportunity to take a penalty arises then we know he will step up and take on the responsibility.
