After three minutes, Inter had a 2-0 lead through goals from Barella and Lukaku before Pasalic brought Atalanta back into it before the break. Earlier in the 2022/23 season, the two sides at the San Siro again in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. Atalanta had never managed to beat Inter in the competition and they failed again on the night thanks to a solitary goal from Matteo Darmian in the second half. Inter would go on to beat Juventus in the semi-finals before winning the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in the final.

Inter and Atalanta's first Serie A meeting in 2022/23 also finished 3-2 to the Nerazzurri – a result that moved them into the top four after a ropey start to the campaign. Things didn't start great for the away side with Adamaola Lookman putting the hosts ahead after 25 minutes.
