Germany vs Netherlands last five H2Hs: Should we expect another classic?

Germany are set to face the Netherlands in an international friendly match in Frankfurt on Tuesday, 26 March as preparations continue for Euro 2024. For the first time in a long time, Germany supporters will be looking forward to a football match after Nagelsmann's men put in their best performance in several years on Saturday against France. The same can be said for the Netherlands who put four past Scotland on Friday.

Netherlands 1-1 Germany – 29th March 2022

The most recent Germany vs Netherlands H2H came in March 2022 in an international friendly. Both sides were gearing up for the World Cup in Qatar later in the year and the match was a good test to see how they were faring against top-quality opposition. On the night, Thomas Muller gave the Germans the lead on the stroke of half time before the Netherlands fought back in the second half to equalise through Steven Bergwijn

Germany 2-4 Netherlands – 6th September 2019

Germany and Netherlands played out a six-goal thriller in September in Euro 2020 qualifying. The Netherlands were out for revenge after losing at home to Germany earlier in the group stage and they got exactly what they were after. Serge Gnabry gave the hosts an early lead but it was all downhill from there. The Netherlands turned the game on its head to lead 2-1 and despite Toni Kroos equalising, they secured the win thanks to two late goals from Malen and Wijnaldum.

Netherlands 2-3 Germany – 24th March 2019

Earlier in qualifying the Netherlands welcomed Germany to Amsterdam for a match between the two favourites in Group C. Both nations occupied the top two spots in the group which set us up for a classic and it didn't disappoint. Germany raced into an early 2-0 lead through Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry before the Netherlands came back at them to level things up at 2-2 midway through the first half. Then, in the dying minutes, Nico Schulz netted to give Germany the three points.

Germany 2-2 Netherlands – 19th November 2018

Another goal glut between these two teams occurred in November 2018, this time in the UEFA Nations League. Germany had endured a miserable campaign, in what was the inaugural season of the competition, and knew they were unable to qualify for the finals coming into the game. The Netherlands, on the other hand, needed just a point which is exactly what they got. It was far from straightforward, though, and they needed two goals at the death from Promes and Van Dijk to see them through.

Netherlands 3-0 Germany – 13th October 2018

The Netherlands recorded a famous victory over Germany in October 2018 in the UEFA Nations League, a result that some would argue was the beginning of the end for Joachim Low as Germany boss. On the night, the Netherlands were rampant and the scoreline could and should have been more severe. In the end, they had to settle for a 3-0 win with the goals coming from Van Dijk, Depay and Wijnaldum.

Potential MVP – Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has made a name for himself this season at Bayer Leverkusen and was finally able to produce his best form for his country on Saturday against France. Wirtz scored the opening goal of the game and ran the game from the midfield alongside Toni Kroos, who has been persuaded to return to international football by Julian Nagelsmann.

Wirtz's goal against France on Saturday night came after just seven seconds, the quickest goal ever for the German national team. His main skill is creating, though, and he has 14 assists to his name at domestic level already this season.
