Authenticity (3/5): Spanish outlet make Torres claim
Arsenal were interested in signing Ferran Torres from Barcelona to strengthen their attack during the winter window. The La Liga side blocked their approach but it is understood that Arsenal are “very attentive” and could make a move for the Spaniard in the summer transfer window.
The story comes from MARCA (via Sport Witness), a Madrid-based outlet who aren't always on point when it comes to updates from Catalunya.
Value (2.5/5): Barcelona not too keen on selling
The report claims Barca's sporting director Deco didn't entertain enquiries from Torres's suitors mid-season.
A lot could change in the next four months, but as things stand, it seems the Spanish giants have no desire to part ways with the 24-year-old. Accordingly, Arsenal may have to offer a lot more than his market value of £24 million to even bring Barcelona to the negotiating table.
Suitability (3.5/5): Threat from the left
The ex-Manchester City star is capable of playing across the frontline. However, his best performances for both City and Barcelona have come when he has been allowed to start from the left and link up with the striker in and around the penalty area.
His movement and positional awareness in and out of possession are perhaps his most appealing traits.
Upgrade? (3.5/5): Martinelli replacement
While Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka have impressed this season under Mikel Arteta, Gabriel Martinelli has looked a shadow of his best self. Accordingly, should Torres arrive, he is most likely to replace the Brazilian on the left flank at the Emirates.
Logic (3.5/5): Versatility adds to logic of move
Torres' versatility should make him a very good rotational option in other attacking areas, not just on the left flank.
Whisper+ verdict: 15/25
Torres has the potential to be a good signing for Arteta, but Arsenal's transfer plans could drastically change depending on how they finish the ongoing season.
Tottenham Hotspur are also expected to be in the race for Torres after failing to convince the La Liga outfit to sell the Spain international last month. Spurs signed Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich. Should the Frenchman fail to impress, Torres could again come into consideration.
However, Ange Postecoglou's side may need to secure Champions League football in order to beat Arsenal to a marquee name in the summer.
