Having cleared their first hurdle on the road to ending 60 years of hurt, England can book their place in the 2026 World Cup knockout stages with a game to spare when they meet Ghana in Tuesday’s Group L clash at Gillette Stadium.

The Three Lions opened with an entertaining 4-2 win over Croatia, firing off 22 shots and looking dangerous throughout. Ghana, by contrast, needed a stoppage‑time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi to edge past Panama 1-0.

Even then, the Black Stars were hardly convincing. They mustered just 38% possession and only two shots on target, spending long spells pinned back in a deep defensive block under the typically pragmatic Carlos Queiroz.

And that conservative approach could play directly into England’s hands.

England's shot volume should overwhelm Ghana

Queiroz has built his career on organisation and defensive discipline, but his teams routinely concede territory and possession. If Panama can dominate Ghana with 62% possession, then England should enjoy even greater control and spend long spells in the Black Stars’ half.

The numbers underline a mismatch. Across their last 30 games, Ghana have allowed 14.36 shots per match, with better quality sides like Brazil, Germany and South Korea all racking up 20+ attempts against them since 2022. England arrive in similarly aggressive form, having produced 20 or more shots in three straight matches, including 22 in that 4–2 win over Croatia.

With Ghana expected to sit in a deep block, England will likely be forced into efforts from distance and half‑spaces, ideal for a trio of Three Lions talent – Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Nico O’Reilly.

Kane is already in full Golden Boot mode after scoring twice against Croatia. He finished that game with seven attempts alone and looked dangerous throughout. Given that Ghana have conceded ten goals in five internationals this year, at least one more Kane strike feels highly realistic.

O’Reilly also stands out. The attack‑minded left‑back had two efforts against Croatia and consistently gets into advanced positions. He produced 23 shots across his final ten Premier League games for Manchester City last season, also scoring two in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, so he looks well placed to hit the two‑shot mark again.

Rice is another strong candidate for a shot. He forced Dominik Livakovic into a save from outside the box in England’s opener and should find similar opportunities against a crowded Ghana penalty area. His involvement on set‑pieces only strengthens his case.

England vs Ghana recommended bets

England to have 20 or more shots – 5/6 (1.91) – Betfair, SkyBet

England have cleared this line in each of their last three matches and should dominate possession against a Ghana side likely to defend deep for long periods.

Nico O'Reilly to have two or more shots – 23/20 (2.15) – Ladbrokes, Coral

The Manchester City man is increasingly influential in attacking areas and recorded two efforts against Croatia.

Declan Rice shot on target from outside the box – 12/5 (3.40) – Betfair, SkyBet

Rice showed his willingness to shoot from distance against Croatia and could be encouraged to do so again if Ghana crowd their penalty area.

Kane to score, O'Reilly 2 or more shots, Rice shot on target from outside the box, and England 20 or more shots – 13/1 (14.00) – Betfair

With England expected to dominate possession and territory, this Bet Builder ties together much of the above – Kane’s finishing threat, O’Reilly’s attacking involvement, and Rice’s willingness to shoot from range.
