The EFL Trophy has been part of the English football calendar since 1982, when it was launched as the Associate Members’ Cup. At the time, the competition was open only to Division three and four clubs, to give teams in the lower echelons of the Football League a genuine chance of playing a cup final at Wembley.
The competition was rebranded as the Football League Trophy in 1992, after the formation of the Premier League. Then, in 2016, it was renamed the EFL Trophy.

The competition has chopped and changed over the years in respect to which teams have been eligible to play in it and the format. One thing has remained constant throughout, though, and that is that it is primarily for clubs in the third and fourth tiers of English football.
Ever since 2016, 16 category 1 Premier League and EFL Championship academy/under-21 sides have taken part in the competition. As of 2025, no under-21 side has ever won the competition.
