Ederson contract wage latest: Could City stopper really earn £1m in a week?

Recent reports have stated that long-serving Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has agreed personal terms on a move to Saudi Arabia.

Al Nassr, who also employ Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane and Aymeric Laporte, have reportedly offered the 30-year-old Brazilian a whopping £900,000 per week, plus a colossal signing-on fee that could see his wages effectively jump to over £1m a week.

How much does Ederson earn right now?

Ederson is believed to be earning around £100,000 per week on his current Manchester City contract, plus performance-related bonuses.

£100,000 per week is more than most goalkeepers, but the Brazilian’s wages lag behind other elite stoppers. Alisson is earning £150,000 per week at Liverpool, for example, and Thibaut Courtois is raking in a huge £250,000 per week at Real Madrid.

What will Ederson earn at Al Nassr if he moves?

If reports are to be believed, Al Nassr are offering Ederson £900,000 per week as his base salary.

Saudi Arabian clubs have the deepest pockets in world football, and are unencumbered by regulations such as the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, or UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

Al-Nassr have seriously flexed their financial muscles in recent years. Cristiano Ronaldo earns £3,200,000 per week, Sadio Mane receives £650,000 for his services weekly, and Ederson’s former Manchester City teammate Aynermic Laporte earns a reported £400,000 per week.

What is Ederson’s transfer value?

Respected transfer website Transfermarkt estimates Ederson’s value at around £30m, perhaps slightly down as a consequence of having just two years left to run on his contract.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Al Nassr have made an opening offer of £25m, but Manchester City are holding out for around £42m, perhaps not unreasonable, given the far less proven Andre Onana moved from Inter to Manchester United for more than that last summer.

Who could replace Ederson at Man City?

Ederson has been a stalwart for City since his arrival in 2017. The Brazilian is a good but not great shot-stopper, but where he shines for the sky blues is in possession.

Pep Guardiola likes his goalkeepers to be outstanding with their feet, capable of accurately passing short or long. Ederson has even registered four assists for City.

He also likes the man between the sticks to command their area and claim crosses with dominance, again, Ederson is one of the best in the business at this.

Though City would be disappointed to see the former Porto man leave, the service he has given them over the last seven years means they are not believed to be willing to stand in his way should he want to leave.

Arguably the best replacement for Ederson could come from within, in the form of Stefan Ortega.

Since joining in 2022 from Arminia Bielefeld, the German’s profile has steadily risen in Manchester and he has matched Ederson’s performances when called upon, possessing a similar profile.

Fresh transfer targets should not be ruled out, however, as the Manchester Evening News have hinted that Andriy Lunin may be on the Citizens’ shopping list.

The Ukrainian goalkeeper played plenty of minutes last season, while Thibaut Courtois was out with an ACL injury. Despite a few wobbly moments, he grew as the season went on, and was key to Real dumping Manchester City out of the Champions League in May.

Lunin is a talented, well-rounded goalkeeper. Under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, he could develop into one of the world’s best.
