Neither side managed to find a breakthrough in the thirty minutes of extra-time and the game had to be settled on penalties. Egypt had a man sent off in extra time and it came back to haunt them in the shootout as their goalkeeper Mohamed Gabal had to take one of the spot-kicks, missed, and Congo DR converted to win 8-7 on penalties.
