Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (2.5/5): Transfer expert in on the story
Not a day goes by without a left-back being linked to Man Utd, and the latest name on the Red Devils long list is Chelsea's out-of-favour Ben Chilwell.
That is being reported on X by football journalist Rudy Galetti, who is a transfers expert, though he has given no information on his sources here.
Value (4/5): Chelsea likely to let him easily
He may have a while left on his current deal, but Chelsea could allow Chilwell to leave for a low price in January, given that 45 minutes against Barrow in the EFL Cup has been the total of his involvement this season under Enzo Maresca, who is yet to name the 27-year-old in a Premier League matchday squad.
Valued at €22 million, United could clinch a deal for a fair bit less.
Suitability (2.5/5): Is he still at the same level
One of the highest-rated full-backs in the country and a regular for England not so long ago, Chilwell's stock fell through long-term injuries before being frozen out at Stamford Bridge.
He has over 150 Premier League appearances and league and UEFA Champions League winner's medals, but is he still the top player he was in his early days in West London? If he is, he will have to prove it in a Ruben Amorim back three, rather than a back four that he is more accustomed to.
Upgrade? (3/5): Playing less than Shaw
Chilwell is the first of the right-backs linked with Old Trafford who is not an obvious upgrade on Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, and has barely played more minutes in all competitions than those two this season.
Perhaps he is back to his best but simply not rated by Maresca, in which case United fans can rest assured that they are signing a top player.
Logic (2/5): Chilwell needs a way out
Even if Amorim's style might not be ideal, Chilwell clearly needs to get back to playing regularly again after so long on the sidelines.
A cheap price will be enticing, but United will be better off persuing Rayan Ait-Nouri, Milos Kerkez or one of the many other full-backs they are monitoring.
Whisper+ verdict: 14/25
With so many question marks over Chilwell, he surely cannot be near the top of Man Utd's list of potential right-back options?
