Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (3.5/5): Reliable outlet shine light on Chelsea's plans
Chelsea are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel amid Robert Sanchez's worrying form. Manchester United are expected to join the race for his signature in the summer.
The story comes from the very reliable The Independent, who say Kobel “fits a lot of the criteria” the figures at Stamford Bridge prefer in a goalkeeper.
Value (2/5): Dortmund don't want to sell
Chelsea could do with a new shot-stopper now but Dortmund have no desire to even open talks over Kobel's exit during the ongoing transfer window. However, their stance is expected to soften at the end of the campaign for their £33.5million-rated player (via Transfermarkt).
Suitability (3.5/5): Commanding presence
The 27-year-old Swiss goalkeeper isn't the most comfortable option with the ball at his feet but he is brilliant when it comes to his positioning, shot-stopping skills and sharp reflexes. Enzo Maresca likes to build from the back and uses goalkeeper in the build-up. However, the more immediate need at Stamford Bridge is of a reliable shot-stopper with commanding presence. Kobel fits the bill, in that regard.
Upgrade? (4/5): Sanchez's replacement
Maresca has continued to back Sanchez despite several high-profile errors from his number one. However, it is suggested the Chelsea hierarchy is exploring the market and could make a move for Kobel to replace the Spaniard.
Logic (3.5/5): New challenge
Dortmund have endured a tough season but the Switzerland international has delivered consistent performances this term. However, after four years at the club, the player might be tempted to move to the Premier League in the summer for better wages and a new challenge.
Whisper+ verdict: 16.5/25
This move makes plenty of sense logically, but it's going to be nearly impossible to get the deal over the line in this window. One to keep an eye on for the summer.
