Chelsea most expensive signings: The top 5

The Blues hold the British transfer record of signing defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Hove Albion for £115m, and it remains to be seen as to whether they will spend anywhere near that kind of sum on their reported transfer targets in this summer window.

1. Moises Caicedo – £115m

The former Brighton star has been a regular at Stamford Bridge, but is perhaps yet to justify such an extortionate price tag given that he is yet to win any major honours with the club, and the Blues in general struggled at times in the Premier League despite him being in the side, finishing in sixth place last season.

2. Enzo Fernandez – £106.8m

Fernandez was a fan favourite among Chelsea supporters, given his tenacity and determination in the middle of the park which saw him win the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina in Qatar, but a recent viral video may have changed their opinions.

After winning the Copa America with Argentina, Fernandez posted a video on social media of him and some of his teammates chanting racist songs towards French people, which did not go down well with some of his French Chelsea teammates.

Indeed, Wesley Fofana publicly expressed his dismay with the video, and Fernandez has since issued an apology. On the pitch, Fernandez has impressed with some of his performances at Stamford Bridge, but with no major honours won for the club so far, he has arguably not yet justified his huge price tag.

3. Romelu Lukaku – £97.5m

Lukaku returned to Chelsea for a second spell after he was sold as a youngster to Everton, but it is safe to say that it has not worked out for the Belgium international. Indeed, he has since been loaned back to Inter Milan, the club that they signed him from, and AS Roma.

Lukaku has been strongly linked with a move to Napoli in this window, which would reunite him with his former manager Antonio Conte and put an end to a nightmare second spell at the Blues.

4. Mykhaylo Mudryk – £88.5m

Chelsea swept under the noses of Premier League and London rivals Arsenal to sign Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk, in a deal that could be worth up to £88.5m including add-ons. It is safe to say that those add-ons do not look like they will be met anytime soon, as Mudryk is another player who has largely failed to impress at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, just seven goals in over 50 appearances for the club is hardly inspiring, and he has looked a little lightweight in the Premier League. However, there is still room for improvement, and new boss Enzo Maresca could well get a tune out of the Ukrainian.

5. Kai Havertz – £75.8m

Perhaps the most successful name on this list given the cheaper price tag, but Havertz's spell at Chelsea was still largely underwhelming. He only managed to score a mere 32 goals in a total of 139 appearances over all competitions, although one of them was the winner in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City, where the Blues won 1-0.

Havertz was sold to Arsenal last summer for £65m, and here in 2024 we have started to see glimpses of the quality that he showed while at Bayer Leverkusen before his move to Chelsea. He also impressed for hosts Germany at the most recent UEFA European Championships.
