Burnley transfer news: Midfielder worth £22m closing in on move

Burnley, looking to strengthen across several positions in the final stretch of the summer transfer window, have received good news regarding one of their main targets.

Nine new signings have already arrived at Turf Moor this summer, but Parker is still on the lookout for more. The Premier League side are now set to recruit Portuguese midfielder Florentino Luis from Benfica Lisbon. Details of his contract and wages have been agreed, and the Clarets have secured the signing ahead of other clubs who had shown interest in the 26-year-old.

Unless a last-minute twist occurs, Florentino Luis will not be heading to France. Previously linked with a move to Olympique de Marseille to replace French international Adrien Rabiot following Dani Ceballos’ failed transfer, the defensive midfielder has instead been overtaken by the English club. According to Sky Italia and Fabrizio Romano, Burnley have won the race for his signature, despite interest from a top Serie A side.

If the current trend continues, the Lobito-born midfielder will join Scott Parker’s Clarets on a two-year loan deal costing €2m (£1.7m), including an obligation to buy set at €24m (£20.7m). Benfica had initially demanded a minimum of €25m (£22m) for Luis, who previously spent the 2020-21 season on loan at AS Monaco and will therefore not be returning to French football.

This signing represents a major boost for Burnley as they look to finalise their squad ahead of the Premier League campaign, while Marseille will now need to reconsider their transfer strategy before the window closes.
