In this article, we have gathered highlights of the biggest Premier League wins so you can relive every goal from these classic encounters.
The record margin for a victory in the Premier League currently stands at nine goals, with four sides managing to win by 9-0 scorelines. Those aside, only one other team has netted nine times in a PL match, but a consolation for the opponent prevented them from truly enjoying parity with the other four immortals in this list.
Listed in chronological order, here are highlights of the top five biggest Premier League wins ever…
Biggest Premier League wins: The top 5
Man Utd 9-0 Ipswich (March 1995)
Taking you all the way back to the 1994/95 Premier League season, Manchester United were trying to win their third consecutive title, and made a big statement in March when they thrashed lowly Ipswich Town 9-0 at Old Trafford.
Andy Cole stole the headlines with five goals, while Mark Hughes grabbed a brace and Roy Keane and Paul Ince also netted. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, they would still fail to win the league, with Blackburn Rovers pipping them to the post.
As for Ipswich, they would go on to finish bottom that season and be relegated down to Division One. As an added indignity, they have since spent 29 years festering in the ‘top 5' of squads infamous for the most goals conceded in a Premier League season.
Spurs 9-1 Wigan (November 2009)
It's not quite the nine-goal margin of the other games in this list, but Tottenham Hotspur still managed to put nine past Wigan Athletic at home in the 2009/10 campaign.
Jermain Defoe managed to get on the scoresheet five times, while Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon, David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar also netted for the hosts. Paul Scharner scored a consolation goal for the visitors.
The win was crucial, as it helped Spurs go on to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while Wigan managed to avoid relegation despite the heavy defeat.
Southampton 0-9 Leicester (October 2019)
This is the biggest margin for an away win in Premier League history, as Leicester City won 9-0 at Southampton in the COVID-hit 2019/20 season.
The Foxes were helped by the early sending off of Ryan Bertrand, but both Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez managed to score hat-tricks, while Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison also managed to get themselves on the scoresheet.
Leicester went on to finish in a respectable fifth place that season, while Southampton still managed to finish as high as 11th despite this harrowing experience.
Man Utd 9-0 Southampton (February 2021)
Just one season later, Southampton were to be beaten by the same scoreline again, this time away at Manchester United. On his first start for the Saints, midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz got himself sent off after just two minutes, while Jan Bednarek was also shown a red card for the visitors midway through the second half.
The Red Devils capitalised on their numerical advantage without mercy, with Anthony Martial grabbing a brace, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Dan James also got the scoresheet, and Bednarek also managed to score an own goal.
Given that this is the only entry on the list to be played behind closed doors, as Britain endured its third and final COVID lockdown, Southampton's suffering was perhaps somewhat diluted compared to the entries above. United went on to finish in second place that season, while Southampton still survived in 15th.
Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth (August 2022)
Our final match on this list comes from Anfield, as Liverpool thrashed AFC Bournemouth 9-0 near the start of the 2022/23 season. Amazingly, Mohamed Salah did not score nor assist in this clash.
Instead, both Luiz Diaz and Roberto Firmino netted braces, while Harvey Elliot, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Fabio Carvalho also scored, and Chris Mepham put the ball through his own net.
Despite this, the Reds only managed to finish in fifth place, missing out on Champions League football, while the Cherries comfortably ended up safe in 15th spot.
