Group G is one of the most diverse groups at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with four nations from four separate continents set to do battle for a place in the knockout stages.
Belgium are expected to be the runaway group winners, but it is all to play for in terms of who qualifies with them, with Iran, New Zealand and Egypt all of a similar level.

World Cup 2026 Group G winner odds
- Belgium – 1/3
- Egypt – 9/2
- Iran – 11/2
- New Zealand- 7/1
Belgium are the odds-on favourites to win Group G, and if they finish any lower than first, then they will consider it a disappointing start to their tournament. Egypt are considered marginally more likely than Iran to finish as group winners, while New Zealand are rank outsiders.
World Cup 2026 Group G qualification odds
- Belgium- 1/50
- Egypt- 3/10
- Iran – 4/9
- New Zealand – 6/4
Shocks do happen at World Cups, but Belgium not making it out of Group G when there will potentially be three spots up for grabs would be up there with the biggest surprises in the history of the tournament. Egypt should also have enough to make it through if Group G ends up with three qualifiers, while Iran and New Zealand also have a decent chance.

2026 World Cup Group G predictions and betting angles
Belgium
The general consensus around the football world is that Belgium's time to win a major tournament has been and gone.
Although some members of the famous ‘golden generation', including Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, are still set to play this summer, they are past their best, and the younger players coming through are not at the level of those who came before.
As ever, Belgium cruised through qualifying, finishing top of their group without tasting defeat. However, this is not the first time they have done this over the past decade, so we shouldn't read too much into it.
While Egypt could cause them some issues, it would be a shock if Belgium didn't qualify from Group G as winners.
Egypt
Egypt are set for their first World Cup appearance since 2018 after failing to qualify for Qatar in 2022, and it is set to be an emotional one as it will almost certainly be Mo Salah's final opportunity to perform on this stage.
Salah, who is leaving Liverpool in the summer, could even retire from international football after the tournament ends, although nothing has yet been confirmed.
The aim for Salah and co will be to make it out of the group stages. If they can, then they will become the first Egyptian side in history to play in the knockout stages of a World Cup.
Iran
Although there is just a month to go to the tournament, it still wouldn't surprise anyone if Iran pulls out of the tournament, due to the ongoing geopolitical conflict between them and the USA.
Let's assume they do end up playing; there is every chance they could cause an upset or two. They qualified for the tournament as group winners in their qualification group and are up to number 20 in the FIFA World Rankings.
Star man, Mehdi Taremi, has enjoyed a strong second half of the season at Olympiacos after moving on from Inter Milan in January, scoring 10 league goals for the Greek giants. Like Salah, this could be Taremi's final chance to make his mark on the world stage.
New Zealand
As far as fourth-ranked teams go in this World Cup, New Zealand are among the strongest. There isn't an awful lot split them, Iran and Egypt and they are certainly capable of taking points off both of them.
Like Iran and Egypt, New Zealand are also looking to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history.
If they are to achieve that goal, then it feels critical that Chris Wood is at the absolute top of his game. If the Forest striker can find the form that saw him net 20 Premier League goals last season, then they will be a team worth keeping an eye on.
