Nuno Espirito Santo will be well aware that there are pockets of West Ham supporters who don't believe he should still be in the dugout after failing to save the club from relegation last season. Therefore, winning London derbies such as this one is vital to him rebuilding trust within the fanbase.

For the majority of last week's match against Burnley, West Ham looked excellent and very much like a team that might find life in the Championship straightforward. However, two later goals meant they walked away from the North West with just a point.

The Hammers have sold several key players this summer, most notably Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka has followed them out the door this week to join Aston Villa. Regardless, Santo will feel he still has a squad capable of challenging for promotion, aided by the additions of Arne Engels and Joe Piroe this week.

Both Engels and Piroe are in line for debuts this weekend, but Tomas Soucek remains unavailable after picking up an injury at the World Cup.

As for Charlton, Nathan Jones will be hoping for a start to the season similar to last year, when they found themselves in and around the playoff positions after 10 matches.

The Addicks ultimately tailed off as the season progressed, but their form in recent weeks suggests they have the quality to stay clear of the relegation battle. Jones' men have won four of their last six in all competitions.

Last weekend's win over Derby was an excellent start, but this weekend marks arguably the hardest match they will play all season. Their away form last season (four wins in 23) suggests they could suffer at the London Stadium.

Jones is still unable to call upon new signing Timothy Ouma, but there is hope that he can make his debut sooner rather than later.
