Turkey League Rules and Information

Turkish Super Lig

Starting from the 2020 season, the Süper Lig expanded to include 20 clubs, though the 2022/23 campaign had 19 teams. The league table is determined by the total points accumulated by each team. In case of a tie-in point, the head-to-head record and goal difference are used as tiebreakers to determine the winner. The club with the highest points at the end of the season is crowned the champion of the Süper Lig.

At the conclusion of the season, the three lowest-placed teams in the Süper Lig are relegated to the 1. Lig, the second-tier league in Turkish football. Simultaneously, the top two teams from the 1. Lig are promoted to the Süper Lig, along with the winner of a playoff involving the third to sixth-placed teams from the 1. Lig.

In addition to the intense competition for the Süper Lig title and relegation battles, teams in the league also strive to secure qualification for prestigious European competitions. The allocation of these spots is as follows:

The champion of the Süper Lig earns direct qualification for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, while the runner-up secures a place in the second qualifying round. The team finishing in third place in the Süper Lig qualifies for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League while the fourth-placed team in the Süper Lig secures a spot in the second qualifying round.

An additional spot in the UEFA Europa League is granted to the winner of the Turkish Cup. This victory earns the club qualification for the play-off round of the Europa League.
