Fenerbahce secured back-to-back Super Lig victories for the first time this season last Sunday when they edged out Samsunspor 2-0 at the Samsun Yeni 19 Mayis Stadium.
Having suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat against Genclerbirligi in the season opener, the Yellow Canaries bounced back with a dominant 4-2 victory over Konyaspor in their first home game on August 22, before Vedat Muriqi and Oguz Aydin scored in either half to sink Samsunspor last weekend.
Sandwiched between the two league victories, Ismail Kartal’s side booked their spot in the Champions League group stages, edging Olympique Lyon 2-1 in the second leg of their playoff clash at the Groupama Stadium to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory over the French outfit.
After two consecutive games on the road, Fenerbahce now return to the Chobani Stadium, where they are unbeaten in 11 straight competitive matches, picking up seven wins and four draws since losing 3-0 against Nottingham Forest in the Europa League knockout-stage playoff on February 19.
On the other hand, Besiktas turned in a five-star team display on Monday when they secured an emphatic 6-2 victory over newly-promoted Corum FK at the Tupras Stadium to move into third place in the league table, only above Fenerbahce on goal difference.
Opening his account for the Istanbul giants, Big-name summer signing Dusan Vlahovic grabbed the headlines at the Tupras Stadium, netting a hat-trick to inspire them to their second league win of the campaign.
While this followed a 1-0 defeat against Lithuanian outfit Kauno Zalgiris at the Darius and Girenas Stadium in the second leg of their Europa League qualifying playoff clash on August 27, a 3-0 home victory in the reverse leg one week earlier proved enough to see Besiktas secure consecutive qualifications to the European showpiece.
Like Fenerbahce, Vincenzo Italiano’s men have picked up six points from the first nine available in the Super Lig, having secured victories over Eyupspor and Corum on either side of a 1-0 defeat against Alanyaspor at the Bahcesehir Okullari Stadium on August 23.
With the additions of experienced names like Vlahovic, Alexander Nubel and former Arsenal man Leandro Trossard, Besiktas have their sights set on ending a six-year title drought, with their Super Lig triumph coming in the 2020-21 campaign.
