Authenticity (2/5): Conflicting messages
Chelsea have entered talks to sign highly-rated left-winger Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.
That is according to the London Evening Standard newspaper, who also claim that Bayern are not willing to sell and Tel has a “clear plan to make his breakthrough in Germany.”
Value (2/5): Bayern will make life tough
Already valued at £25.25 million, 19-year-old Tel is highly-regarded within Vincent Kompany’s squad, having joined in 2022 and capped by France at under-21 level.
A prize asset under contract until 2029 is going to cost Chelsea big, with prices of £40 million and above being speculated.
Suitability (2.5/5): Not shining just yet
Tel can operate on either wing and at centre-forward, and has occupied the left and central forward roles for Vincent Kompany’s men this season.
That versatility will impress Chelsea, and though he has been a rotation option, a return of zero goal involvements in 351 minutes of football this season puts doubt as to how ready he really is.
Upgrade? (4/5): Chelsea struggling on the left
Jadon Sancho has found his feet again at Stamford Bridge, but his loan will expire in the summer, while Mykhailo Mudryk may never play for the Blues again after his doping ban.
That leaves Chelsea very light in terms of left-wingers, and a few months as Sancho’s understudy could pave the way for Tel to make the position his own next season, if he adapts well to the Premier League.
Logic (1.5/5): Developing nicely at Bayern
Already being given first-team opportunities and a clear plan supposedly ahead of him, there is little incentive for the Frenchman to leave Bayern anytime soon.
The price tag could be enough to dissuade Chelsea, even if his potential is great, as the Mudryk situation has accelerated their need for a more experienced left-winger.
Whisper+ verdict: 12/25
He would be an exciting addition to Enzo Maresca’s squad, but the logic is lacking for Chelsea, as well as Tel himself.
