Sweden vs. Tunisia: What's the story?

These two teams' path to the 2026 World Cup could hardly have been more contrasting, as Sweden created a unique piece of history – for both the right and wrong reasons – during the preliminary process.

The Scandinavian outfit became the first team to qualify for a World Cup despite finishing bottom of their Qualifying group with no wins to their name, having drawn two and lost six of their matches in their UEFA section.

However, Blagult's Nations League performance gave them a second shot at making it to the Mundial via the playoffs, an opportunity they did not pass up, as Viktor Gyokeres's hat-trick sealed a dominant semi-final win over Ukraine before the Arsenal man struck late in the final against Poland.

Overseen by former Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter, Sweden are competing at just their second World Cup since 2010, after progressing to the quarter-finals in the 2018 edition.

As for Tunisia, the Eagles of Carthage have made it to a seventh World Cup, but none of their previous six outings have seen the African nation advance beyond the group stage.

Tunisia claimed a sensational 28 points from 10 matches in Qualifying – their best-ever total – but their final two warm-up friendlies ended in 1-0 and 5-0 losses to Austria and Belgium respectively.
