🔥 Our Hot tip

Sporting Lisbon win & over 2.5 goals

Sporting have won each of their last nine home games against Vitoria de Guimaraes, with three of the last four producing at least three goals.

Sporting Lisbon will look to bounce back from a disappointing opening-day result when they welcome Vitoria de Guimaraes to Estadio Jose Alvalade on Friday for matchday two of the 2026-27 Primeira Liga campaign.

The Lions were held to a 2-2 draw away to Estrela Amadora last weekend, while Vitoria suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Arouca in their opening fixture.

The visitors therefore travel to Lisbon seeking an immediate response, but Sporting have a clear statistical advantage heading into the second round of matches thanks to their dominant record in this fixture.

Sporting enter this contest as heavy favourites after finishing last season as Primeira Liga runners-up and winning their home meeting with Vitoria 5-1 in May, further underlining the gulf between the sides in Lisbon.

The Lions carried the momentum of an impressive pre-season campaign into their opener against Estrela, and they did establish a two-goal advantage, courtesy of strikes from Rodrigo Zalazar and Fotis Ioannidis.

However, that lead ultimately slipped away in the final stages, but Sporting showed their ability to create a commanding position away from home, which should encourage Borges with his side expected to enjoy more possession and territory at Alvalade.

Borges also has useful selection decisions to make in attack after Ioannidis took his opportunity to start against Estrela by scoring, while last season's leading scorer Luis Suarez was surprisingly left on the bench for that fixture.

Vitoria's opening-day defeat to Arouca was particularly frustrating because the visitors created enough opportunities to take something from the game, registering 24 attempts and an xG of 2.28 without finding the net.

The Conquerors are nevertheless capable of causing Sporting problems, having beaten the Lions 2-1 in last season's Taca da Liga before eventually ending a 13-year wait for a major trophy by winning the competition.

Margarido can therefore take encouragement from the fact that his side have already shown they can trouble Sporting, although repeating that result at Alvalade represents a considerably tougher challenge for a team that has lost 13 of its last 15 league meetings (D2) at the ground.

The visitors may also have to adjust their attacking plans if Gustavo Silva fails to recover from the injury that forced him off against Arouca, with Alioune Ndoye among those who could shoulder greater responsibility in the final third.

Whispers predicts: Sporting 3-1 Guimaraes

Sporting are heavy favourites because of their remarkable dominance in this fixture at home, making the 1/5 (1.22) home win a reasonable option despite offering limited return.

The goals market, however, offers better value, as this fixture has regularly produced open contests in recent times, and the Lions showed some defensive vulnerability after surrendering a two-goal lead against Estrela, while Vitoria's 2.28 xG against Arouca suggests they could trouble their hosts this weekend.

That makes over 2.5 goals at 1/2 (1.47), as well as both teams to score at 19/20 (1.95), worth considering, with Sporting win & over 2.5 goals at 4/6 (1.66) representing another appealing angle.

Rodrigo Zalazar to score or assist is also a standout option at 1.44 (11/25), with the summer arrival playing a central role in Sporting's attacking display last weekend, scoring once and setting up Ioannidis for the other goal.

A 3-1 correct score in favour of the hosts at 10/1 (11.00) is an attractive outsider selection, as the home side should have enough firepower to secure the points, while Vitoria's attacking threat makes a consolation goal plausible.
