Spain put together a quietly impressive group stage after a surprise start, and head into their 2026 World Cup Round of 32 clash with Austria as deserved favourites to reach the last 16.
Luis de la Fuente's side are unbeaten since March 2024 and are yet to concede a goal in North America, while Austria recovered from defeat to Argentina to finish second in Group J and set up a meeting with one of the tournament favourites at SoFi Stadium.
Breaking down Spain's defence won't be easy, though, and that could leave Austria midfielder Xaver Schlager with plenty of defensive work to do.
Back Xaver Schlager to rack up the fouls
Spain's control without the ball has been one of the stories of the 2026 World Cup.
They have allowed opponents just 4.7 shots per game – the fewest of any nation – while conceding only 0.5 expected goals across their three group matches.
With Austria likely to spend long periods chasing possession, much of Schlager's evening could be spent trying to halt Spain's technically gifted midfield.
The RB Leipzig enforcer has already averaged two fouls per game during the group stage, committing three against Argentina as he battled to contain Lionel Messi and co.
Looking at a larger sample, he averages 1.46 fouls per game across his last 20 appearances, making the line of three or more an achievable target, especially given it landed in all three group games when using ‘super sub' markets. And with this likely to be his toughest assignment of the tournament, the profile fits again.
The match-up only strengthens the case.
Operating on Austria's left side of midfield, Schlager is likely to encounter Pedri, as well as Mikel Merino or Dani Olmo, while also being dragged towards the movement of Lamine Yamal, who will come inside on occasion. Spain's midfield is built around quick combinations and constant rotation, forcing opponents into repeated tactical fouls.
That was evident against Uruguay, where Yamal, Pedri and Merino/Olmo were fouled nine times between them. Across their last 20 appearances, Yamal averages 1.5 fouls won per game, Merino 1.98, Olmo 0.94, and Pedri 0.79.
Schlager has avoided a booking so far this tournament, but given the calibre of opposition and the likelihood of sustained Spanish pressure, that run could easily come to an end.

Spain vs Austria best bets
Xaver Schlager to commit three or more fouls – 14/5 (3.80) PricedUp | 23/10 (3.30) VirginBet | 2/1 (3.00) Bet365
Austria are likely to spend most of the match defending, and Schlager's role shielding the back line should naturally lead to plenty of niggly fouls.
Xaver Schlager to commit three or more fouls and be booked – 17/2 (9.50) Bet365 | 13/2 (7.50) BetMGM
If Spain dominate possession as expected, repeated infringements could eventually earn Austria's midfield enforcer a yellow card at long last.
Bet Builder: Schlager to commit three or more fouls, be booked, and Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Pedri all to be fouled at least once – 14/1 (15.00) Bet365
Spain's creative midfielders consistently draw contact, making this an appealing way to combine the game's strongest foul trends into one high-priced, value selection.
