Scotland vs Japan: Why to back Scott McTominay to score at 7/2

In preparation for playing in their first World Cup since 1998, Scotland are set to face Japan in a friendly at Hampden Park on Saturday evening.

The Scots impressively topped their qualifying group ahead of the likes of Denmark to book their place in this summer's tournament, and will want to make a significant impression in a tough group that also contains five-time winners Brazil and newly-crowned AFCON winners Morocco.

One player that they will rely on is Scott McTominay, who is loving life at Napoli and at international level.

The former Manchester United midfielder drove his side to a Scudetto title win in Serie A last season, and was even nominated for the Ballon d'Or.

Indeed, he is a key player for both club and country, and will be a player to watch on Saturday as he aims to help Scotland beat Japan.

It will not be an easy task for the Scots against a Japanese side that ranks 19 places above them in the FIFA rankings.

They have also qualified for what will be an eighth successive World Cup, having stormed through Asian qualifying with relative ease.

Star names like Kaoru Mitoma and Takefusa Kubo are expected to be tricky customers, but Scotland also boast their own stars like McTominay, who they will hope can make a significant impact.

McTominay boasts 14 international goals in 67 senior caps for his country, so he is no stranger to finding the back of the net.

However, none of those have come in international friendlies, and only Robert Hamilton scored more goals for Scotland (15) without ever netting in a non-competitive match.

Records are there to be broken though, and here is why we would back Scott McTominay to score anytime at 7/2 with bookmakers.

Firstly, only John McGinn has netted more goals than him (20) in the Scotland squad, while McTominay also boasts 11 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions for Napoli so far this season.

He was also Scotland's joint-top scorer in World Cup qualifying with two goals, and ranked second for average shots (1.8) per game and third for xG (1.24).

It is a similar story at Napoli, where only another former United player Rasmus Hojlund has scored more goals (10) than him in Serie A this season, while McTominay ranks top for average shots (2.9) per match and second for xG (8.86).

Of his 14 Scotland goals, 10 have also come on home soil, with Japan the visitors to Hampden Park.

McTominay is also noticeably playing higher up the pitch for his country, in a more attacking midfield position compared to a defensive one a few years ago.

Scott McTominay's record against Japan

McTominay has never played against Japan, while Scotland have only faced them three times in their history.

The Scots have never beaten them (D2, L1) or even scored a goal, but that could all change on Saturday.
