Impact since AFCON 2022

Algeria's last AFCON campaign was disappointing to say the least, as they crashed out at the group stage following defeats against Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast, with a point against Sierra Leone not enough to put them through.

This followed an AFCON win in 2019, making their group stage exit even more shocking. Mahrez could not inspire his side this time around, producing no goals or assists.

However, the 32-year-old has continued to be the player his team-mates look up too, captaining his team on many other occasions since that wretched campaign. Unfortunately, Mahrez and Algeria did not qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but the winger did score one goal and make two assists in his country's last four AFCON qualification games to ensure that they booked their plane to the Ivory Coast.

He has also scored and assisted in friendly wins against Nigeria, Senegal and Cape Verde, with the former two sure to rival Algeria for the AFCON trophy this time around.

Early Algeria predictions AFCON 2024

Algeria vs Angola – Mahrez to score and break Algeria AFCON record

Mahrez goes into the tournament with six AFCON goals to his name, the joint-most an Algerian player has ever managed. One more goal would make him the outright top scorer, and it could happen against bottom-seeds Angola.

On paper, this is the easiest fixture for Algeria in the group stage, and they will want to start off with a bang having gone out with a whimper in the last tournament. Nonetheless, Mahrez will be raring to go, and will surely have the record on his mind.

Algeria vs Burkina Faso – Algeria fail to win

Burkina Faso will certainly be Algeria's toughest challengers in the group, and one that they may fail to overcome. As they crashed out at the group stages in 2022, Burkina Faso finished fourth in the tournament, while they also finished in a commendable third spot as recently as 2017.

One of their most recognisable players is centre-back Edmond Tapsoba, who is the rock of the team and plays his club football at Bayer Leverkusen. He has helped ensure they have remained unbeaten this season and are top of the Bundesliga, and so Mahrez and Algeria may find it tough to get past him.

Mauritania vs Algeria – Algeria to win to nil

Algeria finish off the group stage against the lesser-fancied Mauritania, who like Angola, they should be confident in beating. A draw or defeat against Burkina Faso would put greater impact on this match, and we fancy Algeria to get the job done.

They will be as determined to keep Mauritania out as scoring a few past them, and so a comfortable victory to nil could be on the cards here.
