Republic of Ireland vs England prediction: Irish are dangerous underdogs
Key Stats
- England failed to win seven of their last 12 matches in all competitions.
- England notched one goal in four of their last seven games.
- England haven’t won a fixture in Ireland since 1964.
- Six of Ireland’s last eight home games in the Nations League featured under 2.5 goals.
Correct score prediction: Republic of Ireland 1-1 England
England were beaten finalists at Euro 2024 in the summer, though they routinely found it tough to carve out chances in Germany and notched just eight goals across their seven matches in the tournament. The Three Lions could be in for another frustrating outing in the final third against a highly-motivated Irish outfit in Dublin and a low-scoring draw could be worth backing a consequence.
Pre-game odds and win probability: England odds-on favourites to prevail
- HOME: 11/2 (6.50) – 15.4%
- DRAW: 16/5 (4.20) – 23.8%
- AWAY: 1/2 (1.50) – 66.7%

Both the Republic of Ireland and England embark on new eras on Friday evening under the management of Heimir Hallgrímsson and former Irish international Lee Carsley respectively.
Carsley’s tenure is temporary for now and he will be tasked with leading 1/2 favourites England into battle against the team he represented 40 times. The Nations League hasn’t been kind to the Three Lions in recent years, however.
They have won only two of their last 11 fixtures in the competition and a dogged Ireland – who look like an attractive prospect at 6/4 in the double chance market – could bloody their noses again here. Read our latest football tips page for more of our top predictions and expert analysis.
Most recent H2Hs: Draws have been prevalent
England beat Ireland 3-0 when the teams last met for a friendly encounter in November 2020, though five of the nations’ last seven meetings have finished all square and the Three Lions haven’t won on Irish soil since 1964.
Stats to follow…
Republic of Ireland preview: McAteer chasing first cap
New head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson's first Ireland squad included few surprises with keeper Max O'Leary and midfielder Kasey McAteer the only uncapped players involved. Ireland regularly played in a 3-4-3 formation under previous boss Stephen Kenny, though a change in tack might be in the offing under Hallgrímsson.
Predicted lineup: Kelleher (GK), O'Brien, Collins, O'Shea, Coleman, Knight, Smallbone, Doherty, Ogbene, Szmodics, Ferguson

Player to watch – Declan Rice
Declan Rice is likely to be given the frostiest of welcomes in Dublin on Saturday evening when he turns out against the country he used to represent. Rice collected three caps for Ireland before switching allegiances to the Three Lions in back in early 2019.
Rice under the spotlight
Rice, who was sent off in controversial circumstances for kicking the ball away in Arsenal’s draw with Brighton at the weekend, faces the prospect a daunting evening in Ireland this weekend and his every touch is likely to be greeted with boos and jeers. However, the midfielder is made of stern stuff and should be able to cope.
