RefWatch: Liverpool vs Arsenal Yellow cards betting

A top-of-the-table fixture to whet the appetite ahead of Christmas Day is exactly what everyone wants in the footballing world. Except perhaps Liverpool and Arsenal fans, who could've done without the added stress, but this match could well determine who are the title favourites.

A win would see either of these sides claiming top spot at Christmas, with Manchester City stuttering on the pitch, but with such a reward at stake, tensions are sure to be high and could lead to a load of cautions being handed during the Liverpool vs Arsenal clash.

Total yellow cards – over 4.5 bookings: Evens (2.0)

If either of these sides come out with three points on Saturday evening they'll be top for the Premier League at Christmas, so with a lot on the line, there is sure to be some tension and aggression on and off the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp has called on the Liverpool supporters to be at their best for this clash against Arsenal and that sort of atmosphere is likely to transpire onto the pitch and see the players play on the edge a little bit more than usual.

Chris Kavanagh has been selected to be the man in the middle for this blockbuster clash. The English referee has taken charge of three Liverpool matches so far, having dished out five yellow cards, while in his sole game in charge against the Gunners, he's handed out three cautions.

Most cards – Liverpool: 11/8 (2.38)

On paper, this game shouldn't see a lot of yellow cards as they're the bottom two teams in the Premier League when it comes to picking up bookings. Liverpool have only been handed 30, while Arsenal have an impressive record of just 22 cautions to their name.

However, it is quite a surprise Liverpool find themselves so low down in this table, given they've made 201 fouls in the league this season.

Whereas the Gunners have committed just 162 – the second-fewest in the league – so backing the Reds to pick up the most yellow cards looks like the only sensible option in this specific market.

Darwin Nunez to be booked – 18/5 (4.6)

Darwin Nunez must get through two more games in the Premier League without being booked to ensure he avoids picking up five yellow cards and in turn, receiving a one-game suspension, but that seems rather unlikely.

Having started and played the full game in midweek against West Ham, it seems likely that Klopp will bench Nunez on Saturday, which would seem like a good thing to avoid him picking up a yellow card. In fact, the Uruguayan international has picked up half of his cautions this season when coming on as a substitute.

Nunez can count himself rather unlucky, however, averaging a yellow card for every 2.75 fouls he's committed in the Premier League, although he is lucky to have potentially not received a red against Sheffield United.

Konate & Jesus to be carded and match result Draw – 28/1 (29.0)

This is our special and more outlandish pick for this weekend's game. It's indeed relying on both Ibrahim Konate and Gabriel Jesus to be booked, which isn't beyond the realm of possibility.

Konate has picked up two bookings in the league – with one of them coming in the Merseyside derby – whereas Jesus is on three bookings, which is a surprise given he's missed five matches in the Premier League this term and is a striker.

You can get odds of 5/2 (3.5) for the game to be a draw anyway, so adding on two players who will be grappling against each other all game into the bet and 28/1 doesn't seem that bad of an idea to back.
