Whisper+ analysis

Authenticity (3.5/5): News coming out of Germany

Talks have been held over left-back David Raum signing for Man Utd in the summer 2025 transfer window from RB Leipzig.

This story was reported today by transfer news site teamtalk.com, though the news was broken by Sky Germany, who claim “concrete discussions” were held.

Value (3/5): Leipzig will want every penny

Knowing that United are desperate to strengthen in that position and that Raum will have two years to run on his deal come the summer, Leipzig will not let him go for cheap.

Out with an ankle injury at present, Raum has a remarkable 111 goal involvements at club level throughout his career, aged still only 26. That productivity, plus RB signing him for around £21.5 million in 2022, means they will value him at much higher than his £20.75 million Transfermarkt valuation.

Suitability (3.5/5): Suited to, not experienced in Amorim's style

With those goal and assist numbers, it will come as no surprise than Raum can also play at left-midfield, and has filled in at various positions during his career, even at centre-forward!

He plays at left-back in an unorthodox 4-2-2-2 formation in Leipzig, rather than the 3-4-3 that Ruben Amorim favours, but his experience in the midfield could see him playing further forward for good at Old Trafford.

Upgrade (5/5): Another obvious improvement

The feel-good factor was back at Old Trafford at the weekend, but that doesn't mean they have stopped needing upgrades in key areas, including at left-back, where Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia cannot get a look in and are not part of Amorim's plans.

United have been looking at a whole host of options to replace them, and Raum looks every bit a top candidate.

Logic (4/5): Is Raum looking for a move?

He has spent his whole career in Germany, where the Nuremburg native could be settled, or he could be angling for a move away and a new challenge.

A historic club like Man Utd would be very attractive, but with UEFA Champions League football and challenging for domestic honours already available to him, there might not be much on a footballing front that the Red Devils can offer.

Whisper+ verdict: 19/25

One could probably make a starting XI of left-backs that United have been linked with recently, Raum would look to be as solid an option as any to be the one they finally sign, if he were arriving in January. A summer move could be too late.
