Porto to win both halves

Estoril Praia have failed to win their last 17 Primeira Liga games

Two sides at opposite ends of the Primeira Liga standings square off on Saturday as league leaders play host to rock-bottom Estoril Praia at the Estadio do Dragao. While the Canarinhos will head into the weekend looking to breathe life into what has been a disappointing league campaign, the hosts have stamped their name as the team to beat, having won each of their nine matches so far.

High-flying Porto maintained their stellar domestic form on Wednesday when they picked up a 1-0 victory over Academico Viseu to book their spot in the Taca da Liga semi-finals.

Santiago Gimenez converted his penalty right on the stroke of half time to punch down his first goal in front of the home supporters as Porto held on to see out the result at the Estadio do Dragao.

Attention now turns to the Primeira Liga, where Porto have kicked off their title defence in style, winning each of their nine matches so far, most recently last Saturday’s 1-0 victory over 10-man Gil Vicente at the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos courtesy of a 63rd-minute strike from Borja Sainz.

While the Dragoes are firing on all cylinders back home, their league momentum has not translated seamlessly into Europe, with Francesco Farioli's men losing each of their three Champions League matches, suffering defeats against Manchester City, Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven.

Having ended a three-year wait for the Primeira Liga title last term, Porto have picked up 27 points from a possible 27 in an outstanding start to their title defence to sit five points clear of second-placed Benfica in the league standings.

On the other hand, despite a change in ideas at the helm of affairs, Estoril Praia continue to struggle for results at the wrong end of the league table as they fell to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Moreirense in head coach Leandro Pires’s first league game last weekend.

Having edged out Campeonato de Portugal outfit Salgueiros on penalties in the Taca de Portugal third round on October 18, the hosts found themselves three goals down inside the opening half hour, with Manuel Mendonca, Tiago Andrade and Nile John hitting the target to put Moreirense in the driver’s seat before Peixinho netted a 94th-minute consolation.

With that result, Estoril Praia remain the only side yet to taste victory in the Primeira Liga this season, losing seven and picking up two draws from their nine games to collect two points and sit rock-bottom in the table, five points behind 17th-placed Rio Ave.

Central to their struggles so far has been a lack of firepower at the attacking end of the pitch, where the Canarinhos have netted a league-low five goals so far, making the trip to the Estadio do Dragao another daunting test, particularly against a Porto side that have conceded the fewest number of goals so far (4).

Recent results in this fixture also offer little room for optimism, with Estoril Praia losing each of their last four games against Porto while conceding 10 goals and scoring twice since a 1-0 victory in March 2024.

Whispers’ prediction: Porto 3-0 Estoril Praia

Seeking to find their feet this season, Estoril Praia have their work cut out against a Porto side who are currently firing on all cylinders in the league, and we predict the visitors’ superior quality across the pitch will see them emerge with a commanding victory, which currently sits at 17/100 (1.17).

Five of the last seven meetings between the two teams have seen at least three goals scored, making over 2.5 goals at 18/25 (1.72) a favourable punt, while HT/FT – 1/1 at 33/50 (1.66) is our third pick of the game.

Given the Dragoes’ defensive record, alongside Estoril’s struggles at the attacking end of the pitch, we predict Porto to win + BTTS – No at 33/50 (1.66), while the correct score market has a correct score of 3-0 at 11/2 (6.50).
