Newcastle vs Liverpool: Why to back Alexander Isak to Score or Assist at 20/21 in Premier League clash

The Premier League is finally underway, and Liverpool will open their campaign with a visit to St James' Park on Monday.

Andoni Iraola will lead the Reds out this weekend for the first time in a competitive game having replaced Arne Slot, who was sacked at the end of 2025-26.

Both teams are in a period of transition – the Magpies replaced Eddie Howe with Matthias Jaissle this summer – and their clash could be unpredictable.

However, bet365 have still priced a Liverpool win at 9/10 (1.9), making them clear favourites, while a Toon win has been priced at 3/1 (4).

St James' Park is sure to be vibrant on Sunday, especially as they will be playing their first league match at the ground since the death of former player and manager Kevin Keegan in July.

Sunday's match will no doubt be a highly emotional affair, but it could also be frenzied due to the return of Alexander Isak, who left Newcastle to join Liverpool in 2025.

The striker endured a difficult 2025-26 for the Reds, with the forward only scoring three times and registering just one assist for the club in the Premier League.

It is important to note that Isak only played 699 minutes in the Premier League last term, meaning he averaged a respectable 0.52 goal involvements per 90 in the division.

With a full pre-season now behind him, it could make sense to back Isak to Score or Assist at 20/21 (1.95) on Sunday.

Alexander Isak's goal record assessed

While Isak struggled for Liverpool last term, he has already proven that he can deliver in the Premier League.

The Swede twice scored at least 21 times in the top flight for Newcastle, and he also consistently demonstrated that he could turn up against both high and low blocks.

If Liverpool get the right service into him, it would not be surprising if he managed to find the back of the net, or at least create a number of dangerous situations.
