Sporting Lisbon avoided a second consecutive comeback scare last Friday when they secured a narrow 3-2 victory over Vitoria de Guimaraes after a disappointing second-half collapse at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Goals from Flavio Goncalves, Fotis Ioannidis and Sergi Altimira put Sporting Lisbon in the driver’s seat, and after Samu and Alioune Ndoye hit back for Guimaraes in the second half, the hosts held their own to see out their first win of the season.
This came just six days on from their opening-day collapse against Estrela Amadora at the Estadio Jose Gomes, with the Leoes squandering a two-goal lead in the final 20 minutes courtesy of a 72nd-minute strike from Leandro Antonetti and an 84th-minute own goal from Rui Silva.
With last weekend’s victory, Rui Borges’s men have now gone seven consecutive Primeira Liga games without defeat, a run which saw them finish the 2025-26 league campaign unbeaten in their final five games (3W 2D) to clinch second in the standings.
Sporting Lisbon will be backing themselves to build on last weekend’s victory as they go up against an opposing side who lost each of their three meetings last season, conceding 11 goals and scoring twice across the three matches.
On the other hand, Alverca were denied their first win of the season last Saturday when they played out a 2-2 stalemate with Estrela Amadora at the Complexo Desportivo FC Alverca.
In a game where Chiquinho received his marching orders, Ian Luccas and Vivaldi Semedo netted in a six-minute spell to cancel out Antonetti’s 51st-minute opener, but Abraham Marcus hit back for Estrela in the 69th minute to force a share of the spoils.
This followed a 2-0 defeat against Porto in the league curtain-raiser at the Estadio do Dragao on August 9, when Andre Silva and Gabri Veiga netted first-half penalties to hand the Dragoes all three points.
It has been a difficult start to life at the helm of affairs for new head coach Sergio Ferreira, who signed a one-year contract after leaving Porto’s reserve side in the summer, with the 38-year-old tasked with helping Alverca make the jump into the top half of the table, off the back of an impressive 2025-26 league campaign.
Making their return to the top flight since going down in 2004, Alverca picked up 10 wins and nine draws from their 34 Primeira Liga matches to collect 39 points and finish 11th in the table, level on points with 10th-placed Estoril Praia.

Whispers’ prediction: Sporting Lisbon 3-1 Alverca
At (1.19), Sporting Lisbon are heavily favoured to come out on top this weekend, and given the gulf in quality and depth between the two teams, we are siding with the bookmakers.
With 15 goals scored in the previous four meetings between the two teams, we see over 2.5 goals scored at 47/100 (1.47), while BTTS – Yes at 19/20 (1.95) is a tempting punt, given Sporting’s defensive frailties.
Sporting Lisbon to win + BTTS is priced at 81/50 (2.62), which is the value bet for us this weekend, while a 3-1 correct score at 9/1 (10.00) is our outside pick.
> Over 2.5 goals – Yes at 47/100 (1.47) | Likelihood: Possible
> Sporting Lisbon to win + BTTS – Yes at 81/50 (2.62) | Likelihood: Possible
> Correct score: 3-1 at 9/1 (10.00) | Likelihood: Outsider
