Authenticity (4/5): Sky Sports reporter shines a light on Mendes' situation
Late in December, we covered that Manchester United are interested in securing Nuno Mendes' services. Now, it is being suggested the Premier League giants are pushing to sign the full-back from Paris Saint-Germain, having established ‘contact' with the player's representatives.
?? There is contact between Manchester United and Nuno #Mendes’ management. #MUFC remain strongly interested in a transfer for the 22 y/o left-back this summer.
However, three other top clubs are also pursuing the Portuguese international. A decision is not expected anytime… pic.twitter.com/rvevGqYCm3
— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 6, 2025
The story comes from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, who is one of the most reliable sources in the industry.
Value (3/5): PSG remain firm
As seen during Real Madrid's pursuit of Kylian Mbappe, PSG don't let their key players leave easily. At this point, they still want the 22-year-old to extend his contract beyond 2026. Further, Plettenberg reveals that three other top clubs are also chasing Mendes.
Accordingly, expect United to pay a big transfer fee if they manage to convince PSG to sell their left-back, who is valued at £45.6 million by Transfermarkt.
Suitability (4/5): Amorim knows the player
Ruben Amorim handed Mendes his breakthrough at Sporting and is fully aware of his qualities. Known for his pace and attacking intent, the Portuguese would be an ideal left-sided wing-back in Amorim's 3-4-3 at Old Trafford.
Upgrade? (4.5/5): First choice from day one
Such is the crisis at left-back position at United that the highly-rated Mendes should cement his place as the starting wing-back from the get-go. With Luke Shaw out injured and Tyrell Malacia struggling to impress, a new left-sided wing-back can't arrive soon enough.
Logic (3.5/5): Expensive reunion
As far as Mendes is concerned, a possible reunion with former mentor Amorim presents a perfect opportunity to further his development. United would also benefit from the arrival of such a talented player.
However, his potential price tag may force the Mancunians to consider other targets, including Patrick Dorgu, who is expected to be available for a reasonable fee.
Whisper+ verdict: 19/25
The reputation of the source means the United faithful should keep a close eye on this transfer saga. However, PSG's history of selling players and the English side's financial concerns may complicate their ambitious pursuit.
