After defeats to Besiktas, Olympiacos, and Sturm Graz, Marseille have endured a torrid start to their Europa League campaign. However, their domestic resurgence has overshadowed those continental woes, with Sunday’s 4-3 triumph over Le Havre marking a third consecutive league victory following four straight losses.
Bruno Genesio’s side led 4-0 at one stage but made life unnecessarily difficult in the closing stages – a fact highlighted by one of their goalscorers on the day, Himad Abdelli, whose actions drew criticism from the Marseille head coach.
While Genesio may have taken issue with Abdelli’s delivery, the Algerian’s point was valid: easing off is nearly inexcusable for a team that has experienced such a rocky start to the campaign.
Now up to ninth in the standings, Marseille are closing in on the teams occupying the European places, and a win this weekend would bring them within five points of current leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Marseille’s recent win over Le Havre ended a three-game losing streak at home for Sunday’s hosts, who now aim for back-to-back competitive victories in front of their fans for the first time since February.
Toulouse have been a tough nut to crack this season, losing just two of their eight league matches so far, but a division-high four stalemates, including a goalless draw with Troyes last time out, have limited their progress significantly.
Jens Askou’s men travel to Marseille as one of only two Ligue 1 sides – alongside PSG – to lose away from home this season, although they have managed just one win from four outings.
However, their recent record at the Velodrome of five defeats from their last seven league visits (D2) suggests that unbeaten away run could end this weekend.
Les Violets did win on penalties during their most recent visit in January’s Coupe de France quarter-final, but that remains their only triumph in 19 meetings across all competitions between the sides dating back to March 2016.
Having been outscored 5-1 in the first half of matches this season, Toulouse may struggle to capitalise on Marseille’s tendency to concede early and have themselves conceded first in five of the last six editions of this fixture.

Whispers predicts: Marseille 2-1 Toulouse
Marseille appear to be finding their form again in league action, and while Toulouse are set to provide a stern test, we are backing the home side to claim victory at 9/10 (1.90).
Each of Marseille’s last nine matches and six of Toulouse’s last seven have produced no more than 10 corners, so under 10 corners at 4/5 (1.80) appeals.
Himad Abdelli has scored in three consecutive league appearances for the hosts, and the 2/1 (3.00) option on him to find the net again could offer good value.
> Marseille to win at 9/10 (1.90) | Likelihood: Probable
> Under 10 corners at 4/5 (1.80) | Likelihood: Probable
> Himad Abdelli to score anytime at 2/1 (3.00) | Likelihood: Possible
