Manchester United first goalscorer odds: Højlund to score in sixth straight PL game?

Manchester United continued their mini-resurgence last weekend against Aston Villa, with a 2-1 win away to Aston Villa. Three points at Villa Park were a must to close the gap to fifth place. And thanks to an opener from red-hot Rasmus Højlund and a late winner from Scott McTominay, United are only five points behind Villa.

Manchester United first goalscorer odds: our picks

This weekend, United travel to Kenilworth Road, where they will face one of the biggest surprise packages of recent months in newly-promoted Luton Town. An early goal will be essential to quell the raucous atmosphere at the Hatters’ home ground.

Rasmus Højlund – 6/1

The Premier League floodgates seem to have finally opened for 20-year-old Rasmus Hojlund. After 14 appearances without a league goal, the Dane has now scored in each of his last five Premier League appearances, with an added goal against Newport County in the FA Cup.

He seems to be thriving on the responsibility of being Manchester United’s striker and is brimming with confidence. The powerful Dane is being found with far greater regularity, and is finally getting the quality chances he was deprived of earlier this season.

The 21-year-old has netted three of United’s last four openers in the Premier League, and in his form, 6/1 is a superb price.

Marcus Rashford – 7/1

Rasmus Højlund’s sudden discovery of his goalscoring touch has snatched the headlines away from what has been an encouraging return to form for Marcus Rashford.

The Englishman had not looked motivated or confident much of this season, but has now scored or assisted in five of the Red Devil’s last seven games.

Rashford was the key to United’s strong 2022/23 campaign, scoring 30 goals and registering 10 assists in all competitions. Rashford is blessed with blistering pace, beguilingly quick feet and a truly venomous right foot. His continued return to form and growing relationship with Højlund has the potential to rescue United’s season and fire them back into the Champions League.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8/1

Speaking of attackers in fine form, Alejandro Garnacho’s recent brace against West Ham United brought the teenager’s tally for the season to six, with two assists in addition.

The Argentine winger has built on the promise he showed last season, and grabbed headlines with his spectacular overhead kick against Everton, which is surely nailed on to win goal of the season. He has displaced the far more expensive, Erik ten Hag picked, option in his position in Antony.

Garnacho still shows the inconsistency expected of a man his age, but is going from strength to strength.

Bruno Fernandes – 8/1

Despite his outstanding creative performances, 29-year-old Bruno Fernandes has been on something of a goal drought of late.

He is without a league goal since his winner away to Fulham on 4th November. Which is interesting, given Fernandes was United’s top scorer in his debut Premier League campaign with 18 goals, and has superb striking technique.

But a player of Fernandes’ quality can only go so long without a goal, so do not be surprised to see the Portuguese international net the opener at Kenilworth Road, particularly as he has scored the only goal of the game in narrow away wins to Burnley and Fulham.

Antony – 9/1

A victim of Alejandro Garnacho’s form, Antony, who is constantly reminded of his transfer fee in excess of £80m, has largely been resigned to the bench in recent weeks.

The Brazilian is 10 months without a Premier League goal. His last came against Nottingham Forest on April 16th 2023. He did, however, net a crucial goal against Newport County in the FA Cup, his first goal in any competition this season.

If either Rashford or Garnacho are rested or ruled out of this one, Antony will likely be the one to step up. A goal could be exactly what the former Ajax man needs to restore his faltering career in Manchester.
