Manchester City have been by far and away the most successful club in the Carabao Cup over the past decade, with Pep Guardiola winning the competition on five separate occasions.
While the legitimacy of those wins is now debatable, that doesn't take away the fact that City do take this competition seriously.
Enzo Maresca will be desperate to pick up silverware at the first possible opportunity, so he is expected to follow Guardiola's lead in terms of attitude towards the Carabao Cup.
After losing to Aston Villa at the weekend, Maresca will be even more determined to pick up a win on Wednesday, although some rotation is expected, with Mateo Kovacic, Phil Foden and Ayyoub Bouaddi all expected to come into the starting XI.
As for Brighton, the Carabao Cup represents an excellent opportunity for the club to pick up some well-earned silverware, so they too should take this match seriously.
Fabian Hurzeler's side have been largely excellent in all competitions this season and came from 2-0 down to beat Manchester United 3-2 in the previous round.
However, the Seagulls have struggled in both of their two most recent matches in the build-up to this one, drawing 0-0 with Jablonec in the Europa Conference League and losing 2-0 to Liverpool in the Premier League.
Hurzeler has a deep squad at his disposal, and he is also expected to make some changes on Wednesday, with Costinha, Jaouen Hadjamm, Jack Hinshelwood and Matt O'Riley all in contention to start.
