Everton come into the midweek clash on the back of a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Premier League, a result that left them 11th in the table with 10 points after eight matchweeks.

Few would have predicted that David Moyes's side would take anything from the Emirates, though his team have taken just one point from the last nine on offer in the top flight.

There are concerns about the direction of the Toffees under the Scotsman, though advancing into the EFL Cup's quarter-finals would boost confidence in the fanbase, who are desperate for the club to claim a first trophy since 1995.

Everton defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles could be useful on Thursday, with his ability on the ball a real asset when opposition teams press the Merseysiders.

Newcastle will hope to maintain winning momentum after beating Crystal Palace 2-0 on the weekend, especially as the Magpies had lost three of the four games prior to that victory.

Boss Matthias Jaissle has come under pressure in recent weeks for the team's poor form, though there is an argument that the German deserves leniency given he inherited a weak squad, while he also did not have the benefit of a full pre-season.

A victory for the Magpies would be their second in three meetings with Everton, while a loss would be their third in four clashes with their hosts.

Newcastle duo Harvey Barnes and William Osula both scored against Palace, and they may retain their places in the forward line.

Whispers predicts: Everton 1-2 Newcastle United

Despite the fact the bookmakers have priced a home win at 6/5 (2.2), there may be value in backing an away win at 21/10 (3.1).

Given Everton have scored one or fewer goals in six of their last eight matches, a strong starting bet would be Under 1.5 Goals for Everton at 7/10 (1.7).

The visitors have scored at least two goals in six of their 10 games this season, and that could make a prediction of Over 1.5 Goals for Newcastle United at 6/4 (2.5) sensible.

Newcastle attacker Barnes has netted twice in the EFL Cup so far this season, and that may make a bet of Harvey Barnes to Score at 11/4 (3.75) the way to go.

📈 Everton vs. Newcastle United — Whispers' Tips

> Under 1.5 Goals for Everton at 7/10 (1.7) | Likelihood: Probable

> Over 1.5 Goals for Newcastle United at 6/4 (2.5) | Likelihood: Possible
