Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season to secure a place in Champions League qualifying, marking a clear improvement on their sixth-place finish in the previous campaign.
That return to the Champions League did not result in a place in the league phase, however, as Fenerbahce eliminated Paulo Fonseca's side in the qualifying playoff and sent them into the Europa League for another continental campaign.
