Lyon – Clermont preview: latest form, news, and potential lineups

Read all of the latest injury updates and team news for this duel, including our predicted Lyon vs Clermont lineups.

Lyon

Lyon remained winless after 8 rounds even though they looked very close to the first win in their last game. Great reaction to falling behind when hosting Lorient saw Lyon build a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, they dropped way too deep late on and in the end paid the price as the visitors saved a dramatic 3-3 draw.

With just 3 points and no wins from 8 games, Lyon are under huge pressure. Their defending remains dreadful and they conceded 3 or more goals in 3 of their 4 home matches so far.

The problems in defence can be directly linked to the absence of Lyon’s best centre-back Dejan Lovren. The Croat hasn’t played this season and he will be out until January.

Predicted Lineup:

Lopes (GK), Kumbedi, Mata, Diomande, Tagliafico, Caqueret, Tolisso, Nuamah, Cherki, Balde & Lacazette

Clermont

Clermont’s last match ended in controversy. On their visit to Montpellier, the Lancers were heading towards another defeat. They trailed 2-4 with time running out but then troubles in the stands led to the game being abandoned. The result is likely to stay as final but for this game is officially listed as abandoned.

Clermont sit in last place and they have won just 2 points so far. The inability to score goals combined with some insecure defending led to this awful start.

Clermont can gain some confidence ahead of this trip in the fact that last season they beat Lyon twice in the league.

Neto Borges was sent off in the last round and he will be suspended. At least there are no serious injury issues in the squad right now.

Predicted Lineup:

Diaw (GK), Seidu, Pelmard, Caufriez, Konate, Gonalons, Magnin, Gastien, Allevinah, Cham & Nicholson

Player to Watch: Alexander Lacazette

Lyon's main hope to finally start winning remains their captain Alexander Lacazette. The 32-year-old scored 27 league goals in 35 appearances last season.

Lacazette served suspensions twice already this term and still, despite his very limited time on the pitch, he scored 3 goals in 5 starts already. Pretty much every attack Lyon attempts finishes through Lacazette so him scoring is almost a given if Lyon are on the scoresheet.
