Anthony Gordon was one foot in Liverpool during last winter's window. At that time, Newcastle blocked the Liverpool native's transfer. But that does not mean it cannot happen. The English winger is not in ideal form, yet he is reportedly set to be one of the Reds' transfer priorities this summer.

Anthony Gordon is a Liverpool native, a local lad who made it to the top of English football. He even played for the more famous of the city's clubs, but from 2019 he was part of Everton's academy, where he became a star and one of their biggest hopes.

Carlo Ancelotti gave him a chance in the first team, followed by a loan spell at Preston in the Championship, from which he returned as a starting player and one of the few bright spots at Everton, who were fearing for their Premier League status after Ancelotti's departure. In January 2023, his big transfer came.

Gordon struggling this season

Newcastle bought him from Everton for £38.1m (€45m). He acclimatised in the spring before exploding the following season, becoming an international and one of the best wingers in the league.

He recorded 11 goals and 15 assists. Last year he dipped slightly, but we were still talking about very high-quality performances. In January, he nearly completed a dream move to Liverpool. But Newcastle ultimately blocked it.

And it seems to have affected Gordon, as he has been struggling to find his feet in the Premier League this season, while in the Champions League he already has 6 goals. In the Premier League, his statistics stand at 3 goals and 2 assists, and Newcastle are not performing well.

Liverpool still want Gordon

Even so, he is reportedly once again a priority for the Liverpool club as they seek to find a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who will likely bid a definitive farewell to Anfield Road after this season.

But what divides fans is the fee for which Gordon could move back home. Newcastle are reportedly demanding up to £80m, to which some fans mockingly respond that the Magpies simply forgot to add a decimal point. That is obviously a huge exaggeration, but Gordon is certainly not a £80m player at the moment.

But the market is crazy and nothing is impossible – we also know about the so-called “English premium.” Evidently, however, Liverpool see something in Gordon that makes him the ideal replacement for Salah.
