Liverpool need reinforcements across the pitch, and it appears they could now move for one of their long‑standing defensive targets.

According to reports, the Reds have tracked versatile Atletico Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri for several years.

It is now claimed they may finally act, with Tottenham Hotspur also interested in the £14.5 million defender.

Ruggeri would offer new boss Andoni Iraola valuable competition on the left flank, while also providing reliable cover centrally.

Newcastle handed Ruben Vargas boost

Newcastle United have been handed a timely boost in their search for summer reinforcements.

Reports in Spain claim Sevilla are now willing to sell winger Ruben Vargas for around £17 million, with Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion also showing interest.

Demand for the Switzerland international has risen following his standout 2026 World Cup campaign, where the 27-year-old helped his nation reach the quarter-finals – their best finish in 72 years.

Villa have already secured one of Vargas’ international teammates in a major deal, so if the Magpies are genuinely keen, the door appears open for them to make their move.

Chelsea have long targeted Europe’s brightest young talents, but their recruitment strategy appears to be shifting.

Shock reports claim the Blues are ‘closing in' on a deal to sign veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with Xabi Alonso driving the move.

The Spaniard views the 35-year-old as the ideal alternative to Joao Pedro and is keen to replace a trio of forwards who have been told they can leave.

Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu are all on the chopping block at Stamford Bridge, with the vastly experienced Welbeck now looking likely to become Chelsea’s next arrival.
