It proved to be a productive night for English clubs in the Champions League on Tuesday, with several sides strengthening their positions in Europe and providing fresh reasons for optimism.

While attention remains on matters on the pitch, planning for the winter transfer window continues behind the scenes as clubs assess potential reinforcements and long-term targets.

With speculation beginning to gather pace ahead of January, Football Whispers takes a look at the biggest stories dominating today's headlines.

Manchester United are reportedly planning a defensive overhaul and have revived their interest in Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall ahead of next summer.

According to emerging reports, United remain admirers of the England international after failing to reach an agreement this year due to the Magpies' valuation and reluctance to sell.

It is even claimed that Hall was actually interested in a move to Old Trafford during the previous window despite signing a new deal, while AFC Bournemouth full-back Adrien Truffert is also under consideration.

Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw face uncertain futures, with United expected to target at least one left-back and another central defender.

Liverpool are reportedly among the clubs tracking Barcelona defender Xavi Espart despite the Catalan giants' determination to keep hold of him.

As per reports, Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich all also showed interest in the 19-year-old before he signed a new contract until 2030.

Barcelona are said to regard Espart as untouchable and have protected him with a release clause worth more than €100m (£84m).

It is believed that there is no chance of the versatile full-back leaving in January or next summer, with both the club and player committed to his long-term future at Camp Nou.

Pedro Porro wants LaLiga move

Tottenham Hotspur could now face a battle to keep hold of Pedro Porro amid reported interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The Spain international would seriously consider a return to LaLiga and is attracted by the prospect of competing for major trophies and Champions League football, according to reports.

Porro has reportedly become disillusioned with Spurs' project despite signing a new contract during the summer, with both Spanish giants monitoring his situation.

While no formal move has materialised, the 27-year-old is reportedly expected to be keen on a transfer should either club submit an offer, with Spurs set to demand around £75m.
