Match Preview, Team Information, and Gateshead vs Newcastle Lineups
Gateshead
The lower league team plays its football in the National League which is the fifth tier of football in England. Gateshead's season will start in less than a month and the team is already in full preparation mode for the new year. In a couple of games they played, they had one win and a loss. Some new players arrived this summer with Callum Whelan, Ed Francis, Oli Thompson, Regan Booty, and Jordan Hunter signing on as free agents. There were quite a few departures as well with Kyle Errington, Daniel Jarvis, Harrison Clark, Lewis Leech, and James Montgomery leaving the club when their contracts expired. Gateshead will look to improve since the last time they met Newcastle which was just over a year ago when they went down with a 5-1 score.
Potential lineup: Mair, Booty, Campbell, Francis, Hunter, Pani, Richardson, Rutledge, Olley, Allan, Thompson.
Newcastle
The richest club in the world has been surprisingly frugal with its finances not overspending its budget limits which were artificially set by the club's management. Sandro Tonali is their biggest summer transfer arriving from AC Milan while Yankuba Minteh arrived from Odense. Chris Wood left to join Nottingham Forest. The contracts of Matty Longstaff and Ciaran Clark expired and haven't been renewed. Many pundits are wondering whether Newcastle's top brass is contemplating another major move on the transfer market as there are plenty of rumours floating around like the one about Lovro Majer coming over from Rennes. Sandro Tonali is still on holiday and won't be playing in this match.
Potential lineup: Darlow, Watts, Lascelles, Targett, Krafth, Willock, Hendrick, Anderson, Almiron, Kuol, Wilson.
Player to Watch: Garang Kuol
One of the most talented prospects playing for Newcastle is the 18-year-old Australian Garang Kuol who joined the club at the start of the calendar year. He was signed by Central Coast Mariners and immediately loaned out to Scottish club Hearts. He started the preparation period with Newcastle.
Kuol didn't get much time on the playing field for Hearts scoring only one goal in nine matches. He was much more efficient with the Mariners scoring seven times in 22 games. He is a member of Australia's U23 team but is still waiting for his debut. Kuol is a long-term project for Newcastle who are beginning to invest heavily in their academy as they draw many talented prospects from around the world.
