Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup 2026 stats and odds: Scoring odds widen after ’embarrassing’ first game

After watching Lionel Messi score a hat-trick for Argentina on Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo would have been desperate to get on the scoresheet for Portugal during their opening World Cup match against DR Congo in Group K on Wednesday night.

However, it just wasn't to be, as the 41-year-old looked sluggish throughout, squandering a couple of half-chances and offering very little to the Portugal attack.

His performance was slammed by BBC pundit Chris Sutton, who claimed that Roberto Martinez was 'embarrassing' for not taking him off as Portugal chased a winner in the second half.

Is Ronaldo a spent force at this level, or will he come back with a vengeance against Uzbekistan on Tuesday night?

Stats don't always tell the full story, but these damning figures do a good job of summarising just how ineffective Ronaldo was against DR Congo. The most striking thing to note is that he failed to register a shot on target against a team ranked 43rd in the world.

It is not as if he made up for his poor showing with good work off the ball, as he registered zero tackles, interceptions and blocks.

We've picked out some of the most notable odds for Ronaldo ahead of Portugal's next World Cup match against Uzbekistan.

  • To score anytime: 8/13
  • To score first: 5/2
  • To score last: 5/2
  • To score 2+ goals: 3/1
  • To score a hat-trick: 11/1
  • To make an assist: 4/1
  • To score or assist: 2/5
  • To be shown a card: 15/2
  • To be sent off: 80/1
  • To be fouled: 1/7
  • To foul: 4/6
  • To be booked first: 22/1

Ronaldo was so far off the pace against DR Congo that none of these attacking odds looks particularly appealing. However, his price of 80/1 to be sent off is tempting, especially as he saw red through petulance in a qualifying match against the Republic of Ireland just over six months ago.

If we were to recommend any bet here, though, it would be 3/1 on Ronaldo to score two or more goals. On two of the last three occasions he has scored for Portugal, he has gone on to get another in the same match.
