Cole Palmer out of England squad: How do Phil Foden, Morgan Gibbs-White compare to Chelsea star?

Cole Palmer's return to the England squad has lasted just a matter of days, with the Chelsea star withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel's latest squad because of a muscular injury.

Palmer had been recalled after missing England's 2026 World Cup campaign and had started the new season strongly, registering four goals and two assists across seven appearances for Chelsea before the injury forced him out. 

Morgan Gibbs-White has now been called up as his replacement for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.

The decision leaves an interesting comparison between three attacking midfielders who have all featured prominently in England discussions over the past year.

Gibbs-White gets the immediate opportunity to fill Palmer's place, while Phil Foden remains outside the squad after also missing the World Cup. But how do the three players actually compare?

Palmer's numbers explain why his return to the England squad was welcomed by Tuchel in the first place.

The Chelsea playmaker has already produced four goal involvements in five Premier League appearances this season, scoring twice and supplying two assists, starting all five of the Blues’ league matches and has accumulated 443 minutes.

That comes after a disrupted 2025-26 campaign, when Palmer managed 10 Premier League goals and one assist in 26 appearances.

His underlying importance to Chelsea extends beyond the raw numbers, as Palmer has developed into one of the club's primary creators and attacking focal points, with his ability to receive between the lines, create chances and threaten from the edge of the box making him difficult to replace directly.

There is also the international context, with Palmer having earned 14 senior England caps and two goals since making his debut in November 2023. He scored against Spain in the Euro 2024 final after coming off the bench and also assisted Ollie Watkins's winner against the Netherlands in the semi-final.

Morgan Gibbs-White

Gibbs-White's call-up is not simply a case of replacing one attacking midfielder with another.

The Nottingham Forest star has established himself as one of the most productive English attacking midfielders outside the traditional elite, particularly after his outstanding 2025-26 campaign.

He scored 15 Premier League goals and provided four assists last season, while this term he has started all five of Forest's league games and has one goal and two assists.

His latest contribution came in Forest's 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, when he supplied the assist for the winning goal, while he also scored in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool earlier in the campaign.

Gibbs-White also has an existing relationship with Palmer from England's successful Under-21 side, as both were involved in the team that won the 2023 European Under-21 Championship, with the Forest man scoring and Palmer also finding the net in the semi-final victory over Israel.

The Forest midfielder last appeared for England in October 2025, and has earned six senior caps, although he is still waiting for his first England goal. 

Palmer vs Gibbs-White: who offers more to England?

There is a strong argument for Gibbs-White's inclusion as Palmer's replacement without suggesting that the Forest midfielder is a like-for-like substitute.

Palmer is the more prolific scorer of the two so far this season, while Gibbs-White has produced almost identical creative numbers in the Premier League. The Chelsea man has four goal involvements compared with three for Gibbs-White, despite both having played five league matches.

The bigger difference comes from their recent full-season output, with Gibbs-White scoring 15 Premier League goals last season, five more than Palmer, although the Chelsea midfielder played 26 matches compared with Gibbs-White's 37. 

Palmer's injury problems restricted his involvement significantly, making a direct comparison less straightforward.

There is also a tactical consideration, with Palmer spending much of his Chelsea career operating as an advanced playmaker or right-sided attacker who moves centrally, while Gibbs-White has increasingly become the creative hub of Forest's attack.

That could make Gibbs-White a particularly natural replacement within Tuchel's squad, even if his overall profile is different.

Would Foden have been a better replacement than Gibbs-White?

Foden's omission makes this a more interesting debate.

On career output, there is little question that Foden has the larger body of work. He has scored 68 Premier League goals and provided 35 assists across 229 appearances, while Palmer has 49 goals and 23 assists in 120 matches. Gibbs-White has 34 goals and 33 assists in 195 Premier League appearances.

But international selection is not based solely on career statistics.

Foden has been left out of Tuchel's squad again after his inconsistent 2025-26 campaign, while Gibbs-White has started the current season with three goal involvements in five league games.

The timing therefore works in Gibbs-White's favour. Palmer's injury has opened a space, and Gibbs-White arrives with strong recent club numbers and an established understanding of England's system from his previous international involvement.

Whether he can reproduce Palmer's influence is another matter.

For now, the statistics suggest that Palmer remains the more productive attacking player at the beginning of the 2026-27 campaign, while Gibbs-White has made a credible case to be his replacement and Foden remains the most proven player of the three over a longer period.

With Palmer now unavailable, the England camp will provide Gibbs-White with an opportunity to demonstrate whether he can translate his impressive Forest form into a larger role at international level.
