Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (3/5): Guehi linked with Stamford Bridge return
Having sold their academy product Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace four years ago, Chelsea are showing interest in bringing him back to Stamford Bridge this summer.
That is according to the Daily Mirror, who suggest the Blues are “ready to go big” on the England international.
Value (3.5/5): Mega bid on the cards
Palace value the 24-year-old at £70million. In order to convince the Eagles, Chelsea are willing to offer £50million plus a player. It is claimed that the South London outfit would be prepared to accept Trevor Chalobah, who has enjoyed a promising loan stint at Selhurst Park, as part of a deal.
Suitability (4/5): Leader at the back
Known for his positional awareness, composure in possession, and well-timed tackles, the Englishman has what it takes to lead Chelsea's relatively young backline. Akin to Virgil van Dijk, he is very good at managing his teammates' positions and actions.
Upgrade? (4.5/5): Fofana replacement
Wesley Fofana has spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch since moving to Chelsea from Leicester City three years ago. He is out for the rest of the season again, and it seems the club's hierarchy are losing their patience. Their desire to spend big on Guehi, his possible replacement, underlines that.
Logic (4/5): Homecoming
Guehi will have less than 12 months remaining on his contract at Palace in the summer. Having learned plenty during his time at the club, Guehi appears ready for a big challenge. The opportunity to do that at his boyhood club is bound to appeal to him.
Whisper+ verdict: 19/25
Chelsea's offer should meet Palace's financial demands as well as strengthen their backline with Chalobah. Certainly an interesting prospect!
