Authenticity (4.5/5): Pedro on Chelsea's shortlist
Chelsea appear to be scrambling for a new attacker, as the Blues have shown interest in a number of forwards early in the summer. The latest name to attract their attention is Brighton & Hove Albion‘s Joao Pedro.
According to Fabrizio Romano, initial contacts have already taken place, with Chelsea informed of the situation. Newcastle United are also in the race for the Brazilian.
Value (2.5/5): Considerable fee needed to break Brighton's resolve
Pedro joined the Seagulls from Watford in 2023. He still has three years left on his contract but the 23-year-old appears keen to leave the club this summer. It is understood that Brighton value him at £60million.
Suitability (4/5): Versatile forward
Pedro is a technically proficient footballer, who possesses impressive close control and movement in the final third, making him a nightmare to defend. He has the vision to create chances for his teammates and the ball-striking ability to rattle the net on his own. The Brazil international was involved in 10 goals and seven assists across all competitions this season.
Upgrade? (3/5): Potential Sancho replacement
Pedro mainly thrives as a centre-forward and a second striker but Enzo Maresca already has Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap at his disposal. As such, the Brighton star is likely to be deployed on the left flank should he move to Stamford Bridge.
Logic (2.5/5): Not a concrete plan
The way Chelsea identify their potential signings still remains a mystery. Pedro is a versatile player but his best football comes centrally. Chelsea don't have a great need for a player in that area. They do need a left winger following Jadon Sancho's departure but there's little to suggest Pedro is comfortable as a wide player. As such, it would be best for the player to wait for a club that has a more concrete plan for his development.
Whisper+ verdict: 16.5/25
Brighton's asking price and Chelsea's squad dynamics make this deal difficult to materialise.
