The latest installment of the South Wales Derby takes place this weekend when Cardiff City welcome their arch-rivals Swansea City in the EFL Championship. The clash will take place at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday 16th September 2023 with a 19:45 PM BST kick-off.

Cardiff City vs Swansea City H2H record

To date, there has been a total of 50 H2H meetings between these two Welsh clubs, with Swansea enjoying the overall stronger record of the two.

  • Cardiff Wins: 17
  • Draws: 10
  • Swansea Wins: 23

Cardiff were formed 13 years prior to Swansea, with the first-ever H2H meeting coming during Swansea's first year of existence, with that encounter resulting in a 1-1 draw. However, over more recent times, it is Swansea who have dominated this fixture, recording four victories in succession against their near neighbours.

Swans centre back Nathan Wood was heavily linked with a move to EFL Championship rivals Southampton prior to the transfer deadline, but he remains in place. He is highly likely to start this weekend's game as part of a three-man defence.

Last time out…

A helter-skelter meeting at the Cardiff City Stadium in April was won by Swansea in dramatic fashion. The Bluebirds thought they had secured a point when equalising after 83 minutes, only for Cardiff-born defender Ben Cabango to score a dramatic 93rd minute winner to earn a memorable 3-2 victory.

The result left Cardiff only outside the relegation on goal difference, but they would secure survival with games to spare in the end. The triumph kept Swansea in mid-table, and whilst they enjoyed good form after this they were never going to threaten the play-off race.

Cardiff City vs Swansea City H2H: Potential MVP

Matt Grimes has been the heartbeat of the Swansea midfield for several seasons now. The 28-year-old has been a virtual ever-present in the team since the start of the 2018-19 campaign, making over 40 appearances per season in that period.

Despite continually being linked with a move away over the last couple of years, the Swansea captain penned a new contract extension last month.

His ability to maintain possession for his team and also to cover plenty of ground from his midfield berth makes him an instant selection for Duff in Saturday's derby battle. Over the years, Grimes has particularly enjoyed Swansea vs Cardiff recent H2Hs having been on the winning side across six of his eight appearances against them.

Arguably, his personal highlight over that time came when providing the assist for Michael Obafemi to net the second goal in last season's 2-0 home victory over Cardiff.

Cardiff: Players in focus

Long-serving midfielder can raise to occasion

Joe Ralls is Cardiff City through-and-through and nothing hurts him more knowing he has won only one of seven encounters versus Swansea.

Highly-rated defender can make the difference

Mark McGuinness was something of a coup when Cardiff managed to sign him in 2021, but having endured a difficult time of things he is now one of the first names in the starting XI.

Star name to make experience count

Aaron Ramsey has played at the highest level of the game, but the Cardiff youth team product will still view this clash as one of the most important in his career. He has netted big goals in cup finals and major international tournaments.

Swansea: Players in focus

Yates can be a great in front of goal

Jerry Yates netted two goals in his first three league appearances of the season and is proven at this level from his time with Blackpool.

Forward aims for Cardiff Lowe blow

Jamal Lowe is back with the club after a very productive spell that ended two years ago. He has gone off the boil since then, but pulling on the famous white jersey again could be the turning point he needs in his career.

Impressive Chelsea youngster backed to succeed

Bashir Humphreys was something of a surprise deadline day signing for Swansea given how highly-regarded he is at Chelsea by Mauricio Pochettino.

Final Prediction

Swansea have enjoyed the better in this H2H in recent years but they enter this match winless in their last five in all competitions. Cardiff are due a win against their rivals but have been inconsistent this season, making it hard to know what to expect from them. We believe a draw could be on the cards, with both teams scoring.
