Brighton & Hove Albion's rise from a yo-yo club to established top-half operators has been built on smart recruitment rather than a huge chequebook, with the Seagulls repeatedly buying players cheaply, developing and selling them for substantial profits.

After securing their first-ever promotion to the Premier League in 2017, Brighton have steadily transformed themselves from survival hopefuls into European contenders, qualifying for continental competition for the first time in 2023.

That progress has been driven by a recruitment model centred on finding undervalued talent and maximising their potentials. While Leandro Trossard – sold to Arsenal for £27m –  represents an honourable mention, these five signings offer the clearest examples of Brighton's remarkable transfer strategy.

Alexis Mac Allister's arrival at Brighton in January 2019 barely registered outside the club, with the Seagulls paying around £7m to sign the midfielder from Argentinos Juniors before loaning him back to Argentina for six months.

Mac Allister eventually made his Brighton debut in March 2020 and went on to establish himself as one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League, making 112 appearances and scoring 20 goals for the Seagulls.

The Argentine’s standout campaign came in 2022-23, when he scored 10 Premier League goals as Brighton finished sixth, their highest-ever top-flight placing, and secured European football for the first time in the club's history.

Mac Allister's form carried into the 2022 World Cup, where he became a key member of Argentina's victorious side, starting the final against France and helping his country lift the trophy in Qatar.

Liverpool subsequently moved to sign him in the summer of 2023, activating a release clause reported at £35m, meaning Brighton had turned a £7m investment into a substantial profit on a player who had become a World Cup winner.

Danny Welbeck's Brighton story is rather different, with the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker arriving on a free transfer from Watford in October 2020 after injuries had threatened to derail the latter stages of his career.

Instead, the forward enjoyed a remarkable resurgence at the Amex, staying fit, and he produced some of the best football of his career well into his 30s at the club.

Welbeck eventually scored double figures in consecutive campaigns during his time with Brighton, something he had never managed during his supposed prime at Old Trafford or the Emirates, while also becoming Brighton's all-time leading Premier League goalscorer.

One of his most memorable moments came against former club Manchester United, when Kaoru Mitoma set him up for a poacher's finish that brought up his 100th career goal and made him the leading post-departure scorer against United among players who had previously represented the club.

Brighton therefore enjoyed almost six years of important goals from a player they had signed for nothing before selling him to Chelsea in the summer of 2026 with one year remaining on his contract.

Brighton's signing of Joao Pedro represented a departure from their usual strategy, with the Seagulls paying Watford around £30m for the Brazilian forward in the summer of 2023, making him the club's then-record signing.

The sizeable investment quickly began to look justified as Pedro made an immediate impact during Brighton's first European campaign, finishing as the Europa League group stage's top scorer.

He produced one of the defining moments of that run with a stoppage-time equaliser away to Marseille, before scoring the winner against the same opponents at the Amex as Brighton topped a group that had been dubbed the “Group of Death”.

Pedro ultimately scored 30 goals in 70 appearances across two seasons on the south coast, developing into one of Brighton's most important attacking players while proving capable of operating across the front line.

Chelsea were sufficiently impressed to make their move in the summer of 2025, completing a deal worth up to £60m and giving Brighton another substantial return on a player who had cost around half that amount.

In the process, Brighton turned their then-record purchase into a club-record profit, proving that even their biggest investments can fit neatly into their recruitment model.

Marc Cucurella spent only one season at Brighton, but his impact during that campaign was significant enough to make the Spanish full-back one of the club's most profitable Premier League signings. Brighton paid around £15m to bring him from Getafe in the summer of 2021, and he quickly established himself as one of the standout performers in Graham Potter's side.

Cucurella started 35 Premier League matches in 2021-22, helping Brighton achieve a club-record ninth-placed finish, while his performances earned him the club's Player of the Season award. His energy and technical quality attracted interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs, with Manchester City and Barcelona among those credited with an interest.

Chelsea eventually won the race in August 2022, paying a reported £63m for the defender and handing Brighton a profit of more than £40m after just 12 months.

1. Moises Caicedo

Moises Caicedo remains the clearest example of Brighton's recruitment model working to perfection, with the Ecuadorian midfielder arriving as an inexpensive prospect before becoming one of the most coveted players in Europe.

Brighton signed Caicedo from Independiente del Valle in February 2021 for a reported £4.5m before allowing him to spend the first half of the following season on loan at Belgian side Beerschot to continue his development.

Once back on the south coast, Caicedo forced his way into Brighton's midfield and quickly showcased ball-winning ability that would eventually make him one of the Premier League's leading midfielders.

By the summer of 2023, Liverpool and Chelsea were both competing for his signature, with the Blues eventually winning the race after agreeing a deal worth £115m in August of that year.

The transfer was a British record at the time and represented an extraordinary return on an investment of just £4.5m, particularly as Caicedo had played little more than two full seasons of senior football for Brighton.
