Chelsea’s best Premier League XI of all time: Didier Drogba leads the line

Few clubs have experienced such a dramatic transformation in the Premier League era as Chelsea. From their rise as a serious force in the 1990s to the dominant teams of the 2000s and the title-winning sides that followed, Stamford Bridge has been home to some of English football's greatest players.

Selecting an all-time Chelsea Premier League XI is no easy task. Didier Drogba, Eden Hazard, Claude Makelele, Ashley Cole, John Terry, and Frank Lampard all have compelling cases, while several club legends unfortunately miss out.

Football Whispers picks its best Chelsea Premier League XI of all time in a 4-3-3.

GK: Petr Cech

Petr Cech is the obvious choice in goal. The Czech goalkeeper arrived at Chelsea in 2004 and immediately established himself as one of the Premier League's finest shot-stoppers.

His debut season remains extraordinary: Cech kept 24 clean sheets in 35 league appearances in 2004/05, a Premier League record for a single season. He also played a central role in Chelsea's first two Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho.

Cech eventually recorded 162 Premier League clean sheets for Chelsea and 202 in his overall PL career. His consistency, positioning, reflexes, and commanding presence make him the natural choice.

RB: Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta gets the nod over Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira for his remarkable consistency and versatility.

The Spaniard spent 11 years at Chelsea, winning the Premier League twice and captaining the club through one of its most turbulent periods. He could play at right-back, left-back, or centre-back without a significant drop in quality.

Azpilicueta made 349 Premier League appearances for Chelsea – the most by a foreign player for the club – and was part of the 2014-15 and 2016-17 title-winning sides, playing every minute in the latter.

CB: John Terry

There is little debate over the first centre-back selection. John Terry was the heartbeat of Chelsea's greatest Premier League teams.

A commanding defender, outstanding header of the ball and natural leader, Terry captained Chelsea to five Premier League titles. He made 492 Premier League appearances, scored 41 goals, and kept 214 clean sheets, the most by any defender in Premier League history.

He is also the only player to have featured in all five of Chelsea's title-winning campaigns. Captain, leader, legend. Terry epitomised Chelsea's golden era.

CB: Ricardo Carvalho

Ricardo Carvalho takes the other centre-back spot. While Marcel Desailly, Gary Cahill, and William Gallas all deserve consideration, Carvalho's intelligence, composure, and defensive ability make him the ideal partner for Terry.

The Portuguese defender was outstanding during Chelsea's first two title-winning campaigns under Mourinho. His reading of the game perfectly complemented Terry's physical approach, forming one of the Premier League's finest defensive partnerships.

LB: Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole is arguably the easiest defensive pick after Terry, as he is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's greatest left-backs.

Cole combined elite defensive ability with pace, stamina, and attacking quality. At Chelsea, he won the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and FA Cup.

His ability to handle the world's best wingers made him invaluable, and he was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2024 alongside Terry.

DM: Claude Makelele

Claude Makelele revolutionised the defensive midfield position at Chelsea. His reading of the game, positioning, and ability to protect the defence allowed Chelsea's creative players to flourish.

Makelele was so influential that the deep-lying midfield role became known as the ‘Makelele role'.

Even John Terry included him in his own Chelsea Team of 120, describing Makelele as the best in his position and praising his ability to clean up everything in front of the defence.

CM: Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard is not only a guaranteed starter; he is arguably the greatest player in Chelsea's Premier League history.

Lampard scored 147 Premier League goals for Chelsea, a remarkable figure for a midfielder, and 211 in all competitions, making him the club's all-time top scorer.

He also made 429 Premier League appearances and famously played 164 consecutive league matches without missing a game. His goals, assists, durability, and leadership made him indispensable to Chelsea's success.

CM: N'Golo Kante

N'Golo Kante completes the midfield trio. The Frenchman was a phenomenal ball-winner whose energy and intelligence allowed him to influence matches from box to box.

He played a crucial role in Chelsea's 2016/17 Premier League title triumph and became one of the world's best midfielders. The Frenchman also put together one of the best midfield UCL campaigns en route to Chelsea's European glory in 2021

While Michael Ballack and Michael Essien have strong claims, Kante's defensive work, mobility, and ability to dominate midfield battles give him the edge.

LW: Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard was Chelsea's outstanding entertainer of the 2010s: the Belgian combined explosive acceleration, close control, creativity, and the ability to score spectacular goals.

During his Chelsea career, he scored 85 Premier League goals and provided 54 assists in 245 appearances after moving from Lille shortly after Chelsea's 2012 UCL success, making him one of Chelsea's best Premier League signings of all time.

His final Premier League season was particularly impressive, with 16 goals and 15 assists in 2018/19. Hazard was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2025.

RW: Gianfranco Zola

Gianfranco Zola gets the nod on the right, though his role would be more fluid than a traditional winger.

The Italian was one of the most technically gifted players ever to wear Chelsea's shirt. His creativity, imagination, and ability to produce moments of magic made him a Stamford Bridge favourite.

Zola represents an important period in Chelsea's development, helping establish the club as a destination for elite international talent before the Roman Abramovich era.

ST: Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba leads the line up front. Powerful, athletic, technically gifted, and seemingly built for the biggest occasions, Drogba was the perfect striker for Chelsea's rise to dominance.

He scored 20 Premier League goals in 2006/07, winning the Golden Boot, and picked up another top-scorer award three years later. He was instrumental in major cup victories and remained a nightmare for defenders throughout his Chelsea career.
