Brazil vs Norway squad comparison: Market values, most expensive players | World Cup 2026

Brazil and Norway meet at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on Sunday, July 5, with the winner progressing to the quarter-finals.

Brazil are chasing a record-extending sixth World Cup title, while Norway are hoping to go all the way for the first time in their history, and the two sides arrive here having finished in contrasting positions in their respective groups.

The Selecao made the perfect start with a 1-1 draw against Morocco, before beating Haiti 3-0 and Scotland 3-0 to finish top of Group C on seven points, edging out Morocco on goal difference.

They went ahead to face Japan in the Round of 32, recording a comeback 2-1 victory to progress in a game they grabbed a late winner.

Norway, meanwhile, thrashed Iraq 4-1 in their opener and edged Senegal 3-2, before a 4-1 defeat to France in their final group game left them second in Group I on six points, setting up a Round of 32 date with Ivory Coast, who they beat 2-1.

This will be the second meeting between Brazil and Norway at the World Cup, and the two sides have met four times competitively in the past, with Norway unbeaten in those meetings, including a famous 2-1 win over the Selecao at the 1998 World Cup, when Kjetil Rekdal's 89th-minute penalty completed a stunning comeback.

The last time they faced off was a 1-1 friendly draw back in 2006. There have been plenty of changes to both squads since then, while Vinicius Jr and Erling Haaland, two of the tournament's standout attackers, will be the two players tasked with settling this one.

Football Whispers takes a look at how the two squads compare in terms of their most and least valuable players.

*All values from Transfermarkt

Brazil's total squad value stands at €928.2million (£794.5m), ranking them sixth among all World Cup 2026 squads.

Norway, meanwhile, are valued at €589.9million (£505.0m), putting them ninth on the list, still one of the tournament's most valuable squads outside the European elite.

It sets up a Round of 16 tie in New Jersey where Brazil's superior overall value will be tested by the individual brilliance of the World Cup's most expensive player.

Brazil's value is led by Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr, valued at €140m (£119.9m), with Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes and Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha ranked joint-second (€75m/£64.2m).

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes and Barcelona's Raphinha share third spot, both valued at €70m (£59.9m) apiece.

Norway's list, by contrast, is dominated by a single name, with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland valued at €200m (£171.2m), making him the joint most valuable player at the entire World Cup.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is a distant second at €65m (£55.6m), with striker Jorgen Strand Larsen third on €40m (£34.2m).

Brazil vs Norway least valuable players

Despite being one of the most recognisable names in the squad, Neymar is valued at just €8m (£6.9m), making him the sixth least-valued player in Carlo Ancelotti's entire squad.

However, the player with the lowest value in the Brazilian team is Gremio goalkeeper Weverton, valued at €700k (£600k).

Norway's value is even more top-heavy, with Haaland alone accounting for well over a third of the squad's total worth

The last valued player in the team is free-agent goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, who is valued at €800k (£685k).

Brazil vs Norway: Transfer records

While his current value has tanked due to age and persistent fitness issues,  Brazil's most expensive player in history remains Neymar, whose move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 cost €222m (£190.0m).

This still remains the biggest transfer fee ever paid for any player, let alone a Brazilian, in football history.

Norway's record transfer is a fraction of that fee, but it's arguably an even bigger bargain in hindsight. Haaland's move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City in 2022 cost just €60m (£51.2m), a release-clause fee that looks minuscule given he is since become the most valuable player on the planet.
