Authenticity (4.5/5): Romano shines light on Veiga's situation
Atletico Madrid have shown interest in signing Chelsea youngster Renato Veiga, and are understood to be in “direct talks” with the Premier League outfit to find an agreement over a permanent transfer.
That is according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who is one of the best in the business.
Value (2.5/5): Chelsea refusing to lower their demands
Veiga isn't considered part of Enzo Maresca's first-team plans at Stamford Bridge, having spent the second half of last season at Juventus on loan. Yet, the Blues remain firm on their relatively high valuation. They signed him from FC Basel in an £11.8m deal and are now demanding around £35m from the La Liga outfit.
Suitability (3.5/5): Ball-playing centre-back
Veiga is primarily a left-back, but such is his impressive versatility, he has also regularly played as a centre-back. The 21-year-old possesses incredible positional awareness and on-ball composure to play as a central defender for any team that likes to dominate possession.
Upgrade? (3/5): Romero alternative
Diego Simeone is believed to be a huge admirer of Cristian Romero. However, Tottenham Hotspur are reluctant to part ways with the Argentine. As such, Veiga appears to be his alternative. Although not as solid as Romero in defensive situations, the Portuguese has the physicality to be effective at the heart of Atletico's defence.
Logic (4/5): Player wants the move
Romano underlines that Veiga has said “yes” to the Spanish giants. Having failed to establish himself at Chelsea, he appears keen on finding a new permanent home after showing promise during his loan stint at Juventus.
